Family Service Assistant

Nancy grew up in New Richmond, where her parents owned and operated a men’s clothing store, The Toggery.  She graduated from New Richmond High School and furthered her education at UW-Stout graduating with a major in Vocational Rehabilitation and Psychology. Nancy held the position of Work Activity Director at Greenhaven Heights in St. Paul where she provided on-site employment for one hundred and thirty adults with intellectual disabilities.

Nancy is a gardener for the City of Hudson and for twenty years has maintained park gardens. She is not a Master Gardener, but grew up with the mastering gardeners…her mother and both grandmothers. Nancy is thoroughly honored to work at O’Connell Funeral home with families in their time of deep sorrow. She considers the team at O’Connells as not only co-workers but dear friends. She considers herself very blessed to have this opportunity.

Nancy has a wonderful, patient husband Gary.  They have a son, Tyler and his wife Megan plus two awesome granddaughters, Agatha and Vivian who bring love and joy to the world! A beloved daughter Kaila was killed in a car accident in 2015. Kaila’s light and zesty spirit forever shines bright!

Nancy loves being Irish and proud to be from the McDermott clan! Through an incredible journey, Nancy felt the greatest meaning and healing came by helping others through their pain and sorrow. Her experience with Kaila’s death has given her a deep understanding and empathy. Nancy is the first to welcome others with a smile at visitations and funerals at O’Connell’s. She is a true blessing to the O’Connell Family.

In her spare time Nancy can be found in her gardens, spending time at the deer shack near Frederic, WI, rock hounding, and helping with the Hot Air Affair. Though she has a fear of heights she took her first (and last!) hot air balloon ride….with her eyes shut most of the trip!
