Alice Joy (Verelius) Addison (formerly of Duluth, MN) passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Eagle’s Rest Assisted Living in Pepin, WI, at the age of 89.

Alice was born on September 13, 1934, in Duluth, MN where she spent much of her life.  She was the youngest of three siblings that grew up in the West End/Lincoln Park neighborhood.  Alice graduated from Duluth Denfeld High School in 1952.  On September 14, 1957, she married Franklin David Addison at Zion Lutheran Church in Duluth, MN, embarking on a lifelong commitment that spanned 66 years.  Her husband’s military career in the Air Force led them to Grand Rapids, MN where they welcomed their first child, David Paul, in 1959.  Shortly after being stationed in Duluth, MN, they welcomed their second child, Mary Alice, in 1960.  Frank’s military career led them to Lewistown, MT where they welcomed their last child, Karen Sue, in 1965. The Addisons returned to Duluth in 1966 where they remained until Alice and Frank relocated to Hudson, WI to be closer to their daughter Karen’s family in 2014.

Alice was known for using her hands to create and share beauty in various forms throughout her long life. She learned to play the violin, organ, and piano as a young girl and participated in the orchestra during her secondary school years. Despite her modesty about her cooking skills, one of her signature dishes, chicken salad, often left her family seeking second (or third) servings and would earn her the “pretty good for a change” seal of approval from her son David. Her grandchildren fondly remember her famous “back tickles” that helped them ease into a state of rest and created cherished memories of comfort. However, it was her talent for sewing, machine embroidery, knitting, and quilting that were her most distinguished talents. The Halloween costumes and Christmas stockings for her grandchildren, a closet full of custom embroidered crewnecks for her husband, or the final quilt she crafted for her daughter Karen are just examples of her works of love that have been and will continue to be proudly used and displayed in her memory for many years to come.

Alice is preceded in death by her parents, Erika and Gust Verelius; her brothers, Clarence Verelius and Donald Verelius; and her son, David Addison. She is survived by her husband, Franklin Addison; daughters, Mary (Steve) Randby and Karen (Tim) Jubie; six grandchildren, Stephanie Randby, Jessica (Brandon) Anderson, Samantha Randby, Erika (Cody) Zimmerman, Jacob (Stevie) Jubie, and Nicholas (Hannah) Jubie; and great-

grandchildren, Hannah Maudal, Odin Maudal, and Ashton Jubie, with two more great-granddaughters arriving in early Summer 2024.

We know Alice would want to extend a special appreciation to her daughter, Karen, for the advocacy to ensure she received the care of Saint Croix Hospice and Eagle’s Rest Assisted Living that peacefully ushered her through her final year of life. The knowing of her daughter’s love and loyalty transcended Alice’s failing memory until her final days.

The visitation will be on Friday, February 9, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., with a luncheon immediately following the service at O’Connell Family Funeral Home.  Interment will be at Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery, Duluth, MN.  Arrangements by O’Connell Family Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, 520 11th Street, Hudson, WI. 54016 (715) 386-3725.
