Alice Koshenina

Alice Koshenina went to her Lord and Savior on November 21, 2015 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.   Alice was born the first of 11 children to Fred and Elizabeth (Stueve) Atkinson on June 30, 1926 on a farm near Freeport, MN. She grew up on a farm near Upsala, MN. As a young adult, Alice moved away for a short time, but was called back to help care for her younger siblings when her mother was diagnosed with tuberculosis.  Over the next three years, she would help the family and become reacquainted with Anthony “Tony” Koshenina who was working his, adjacent, family farm. She graduated at age 15 from Upsala High School and moved to St. Cloud and then St. Paul to work.

As children, Alice and Tony and their siblings, along with other children from the neighborhood, often got together to play softball and other games. During World War II, they corresponded, fell in love and were married on January 13, 1947 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale, MN.

Alice was active in her church and taught CCD for many years in St. Paul, Hudson, WI and Hammond, WI.  She was very involved in her community, especially in the St. Croix County Extension Homemakers Club in various leadership capacities, and as a 4-H leader.

Alice worked as a waitress at the St. Paul Hotel in the 40’s and 50’s and at LaBon’s truck stop near Hudson, WI in the 1960’s and 70’s, but her main accomplishment was to raise her family and manage their household. Alice found many opportunities to visit with family and friends around the card table and will be sadly missed by the game players in Texas and Wisconsin.

She is survived by Anthony (Tony), her loving husband of nearly 69 years, and their 7 children, Juletta (Mike) Cohan, Dan (Gail), Mike (Peggy), Peter (Becky), Mary (David) Schottler, Jean (Steve) Gullikson, and Anne (Rick) Reams, 18 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren -the 19th due in December.  She is also survived by 2 sisters, Helen (Kenneth) Heisick and Irene (Eugene) Lashinski, and 5 brothers, Richard (Rita), Donald (Kathy), Fred, John (Marlys), and David (Gay) Atkinson.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Frederick and Elizabeth (Stueve) Atkinson and 3 brothers, James, Jerome and Ervin.

Mass of Christian burial will be 12PM (Noon) Tuesday, November 24 Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hammond, WI with Fr. Jerry Harris officiating.  Visitation will be 2 hours prior to the mass at church Tuesday morning. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to a charity of your choice.  Funeral services entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Homes.
