Carolyn “Kary” Dalton

Carolyn “Kary” Rhein Dalton, age 81, of Hammond, passed away July 2, 2016 at her home surrounded by her loving family, shortly after a family celebration of her life. Carolyn was born July 9, 1934 in St. Paul, MN, the daughter of Theodore and Gabriella (McGuire) Rhein. She graduated from Harding High School, the Class of 1952. After high school, Kary worked as a secretary before being united in marriage on October 3, 1953 to John “Jack” Dalton at St. Pascal Baylon Catholic Church in St. Paul. This union was blessed with six children: John, Steven, Debra, Thomas, David and Julie. Most important to Kary was her family. She was a devoted military and farm wife, and loving mother. Kary not only provided a loving home for her family, but also worked on the farm and drove semi truck for many years with her husband Jack.

Outside of being an example of hard work and love to her family, Kary enjoyed her flower garden, bowling, playing cribbage, and fishing. Many special memories were made with her trips to the casino trying her luck. She had a great bond with her Red Hat Club, and delighted in the friendships that blossomed. Her gracious heart was evident in the way she took care of others, her thoughtfulness and giving ways, and her welcoming of family and friends for special gatherings and holidays.

Carolyn will remain in the hearts of her children: Johnny (Jeannie) Dalton of Emerald, Steve (Sandy) Dalton of Somerset, Deb (Joe) Clennon of Hammond, Tom (Terry) Dalton of New Richmond, Dave Dalton of Hammond, and Julie Dalton of St. Paul; 13 grandchildren: Missy (Matt), Shelly (Ed), Laura (Gabe), Jason, Lindsay (Ryan), Scott, Crystal, Cody, Dave (Liz), Mike, Christina (Mike), Tommy, and Nicole (Derek); 15 great grandchildren: Emma, Addy, Brynlee, Brystol, Isabelle, Alex, Brady, Landon, Declan, Finley, Mara, Tessa, Colton, Mason, and Knox, and two soon to be welcomed great-grand babies, Teegan and Evelyn; brother, George Rhein of New Market; sister, Kathy (George) Dege of Lake Elmo; sisters-in-law, Diane Dalton of Woodbury, Libby Dalton of New Richmond, and Nancy Dalton of St. Paul; as well as other loving relatives, and dear friends. Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; parents, Ted and Gay Rhein; brother, Ted Jr.; brothers-in-law, Richard, Robert and Pierre; sisters-in-law, Gretchen and Joanne; and special cousin, Tom McGuire.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place 11:00 AM Wednesday, July 6 at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1295 Ridgeway St., Hammond, officiated by Fr. Jerry Harris. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 PM Tuesday, July 5 at O’Connell Family Funeral Home, 1010 Newton St., Baldwin, and one hour prior to Mass at the church. Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Church Cemetery. Kary’s children have the honor of serving as pallbearers, and grandchildren as honorary pallbearers. Funeral services are entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Baldwin.
