Carroll D Stensland

Carroll Dean Stensland, age 84, of Hammond, Wisconsin, died suddenly on January 28, 2014 at United Hospital in St. Paul. Carroll was born in Mason City, Iowa on July 28, 1929. He grew up in Iowa, the son of Bert and Elizabeth Stensland. After graduating high school, Carroll joined the US Marine Corps. He then transferred into the US Army where he worked as a records clerk in Wisconsin at Camp McCoy. It was during this time that he met Marilyn Johnson. Carroll and Marilyn were united in marriage in 1951 at the Woodville Baptist Church. The marriage would be blessed with six children. Once Carroll had completed his time in the military, the family moved to Lakeland, Minnesota where he worked as a self-employed contractor. Upon retirement, Carroll and Marilyn moved to Casa Grande, Arizona. They made a final move to Hammond in 2004 to be close to friends and family.

Carroll was known as an outdoorsman. He enjoyed camping and hunting, never missing a bow or rifle season. He enjoyed sports as well, participating in softball up to age 77 and was most recently still bowling with friends. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather.

Carroll is survived by his wife, Marilyn; son, Duane (Debra) Stensland of Stillwater, MN; 4 daughters, Sheryl (Mike) Vezner of Wanderoos, WI, Penny (Robert) Urman of Somerset, WI, Kathy Stewart of Hammond, WI, and Kelly (Dan) Dana of Stillwater, MN; brother, Jerry (Leann) Kilborn of Mora, MN; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and dear friends. He is preceded in death by a daughter, Jill Zigan.

A Funeral Celebration of Life for Carroll Stensland will be held at 3:00pm on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the First Baptist Church, 581 Old Cty Rd B in Woodville. Visitation will take place from 1:00pm until the time of service. Burial will be held at a later date at Fort Snelling. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers. Services are in the care of the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Baldwin. 715-684-3434
