Charles “Charlie” Grant

Charles A. Grant, age 86, retired St. Croix County Sheriff as well as honored member of St. Croix County American Legion, died unexpectedly Wednesday, August 22, at his residence. Charlie was born in on May 27, 1932, the son of Arnold and Evelyn (O’Brien) Grant in River Falls, WI. Charlie entered into the United States Armed Forces as a member of the Air Force following his high school graduation; he served for two years before his honorable discharge. On September 23, 1967, Charlie was united in marriage to Vera Wilcoxson in Hudson, WI.

Charlie spent his life caring for others – from years as a young boy caring for his dad who had MS, then as a teenage boy who had to take on the role of “man of the house” when his dad died, to serving in the Air Force, and then 16 years caring for the folks of St. Croix County as our sheriff.

Since his retirement from sheriff he’s continued to serve others through work on the County Board and the American Legion.

Charlie is known for always having something to give out – maybe a flashlight or pen and always a piece for candy for kids at church.

Charlie had a profound impact not only on his family, but also on the community and truly anyone who came into contact with him. Everyone will miss him greatly, but will try to follow his lead and care for others the way he did.

Charlie will remain in the hearts of his wife of over 50 years, Vera; children, Marla (Carl) Burton, Charles T. (Heather) Grant, Holly (Brian) Monroe; grandchildren, Kendrick (Ashley) Lalley, Garrett (Kendra) Lalley, Danny Holsapple, Alex Grant, Cassie Grant, and Joey Grant; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended family, and countless members of the community in which Charlie proudly served.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Evelyn; siblings, Donna (Roland) Forsythe, and Lois (Bob) Carlson.
