Charlotte Penman

Charlotte Cecelia Penman, age 90, of Hudson, WI, died April 28, 2016.

Char was born August 4, 1927 in St. Paul MN, the oldest daughter of Michael J. and Clara (Bienemann) Hughes. The family moved to Hudson in 1936 where she attended St Patrick’s grade school. She graduated from St Francis High School in Little Falls, MN in 1945. Char married Robert Wood Penman and the couple lived most of their lives in Hudson or North Hudson. Their late daughter, Anita, lived in Hudson and was the owner of Vine Street Florist.

Char was a loving, generous person with many friends. She was an active participant in many organizations, particularly the VFW and St Patrick’s Catholic Church. She was probably best known in Hudson for the beautiful cookies, which were distributed each Friday by several of the banks in town as “dividends” to their patrons. She was the “Cookie Lady” for many years. Her homemade ravioli were also well known and she was most generous in passing on her recipes and know-how to anyone who asked.

She enjoyed playing cribbage and Scrabble, worked the daily crossword puzzle for years, and seldom missed watching Jeopardy. One dollar wagers over games between her Packers and Brewers and family members’ teams were frequent and bragging rights for the season were precious.

Her family is most grateful and deeply indebted to Gabby Joseph, Terriann Tebben, and Mark Penman for their presence to and help for Char during the past five years, becoming her “local” family. Their loving support truly exemplified both the Spiritual and the Corporal Works of Mercy. The care of the staff at Comforts of Home in their efforts to keep Char comfortable in the two years she resided there are acknowledged and greatly appreciated. Thanks are due also to members of the Hudson Hospital Hospice team that were with Char during her last days.

Char was preceded in death by her mother and father; her husband, Bob; her daughter, Anita; a brother-in-law, Gordon Penman; and a sister-in-law, Arleen Hughes. She is survived by her sisters, Kathleen (Terry) Dooley of Sherman Oaks, CA and Faith Carole Thomason of Fontana, CA; brothers, Mark (Mary) of Waite Park, MN and Gregory (Ginger) of Michigan and Arizona; granddaughter, Melissa Ollerman of New Hampshire; and great-grandchildren, Sabrina and Ricky Ollerman. Char was “Aunt Charlie” to dozens of nieces and nephews, many of whom reside in Wisconsin and Minnesota, with others spread from Virginia to Texas to California.

Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at St Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1500 Vine St., Hudson, with visitation one hour before Mass at church. Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Char asked that friends, if they wished, make a gift to the charity of their choice in her memory.
