Clyde W Gunsallus

Clyde Gunsallus, age 90, passed away at Amery Regional Medical Center on July 21, after abrief hospital stay.He was born April 16, 1924 to Paul and Freda Gunsallus in Lake Lynn, Pennsylvania. He joinedthe Navy at a young age and served in World War II. He was aboard the escort carrier USSGambier Bay when it was sunk in the Battle of Leyte Gulf off the Philippine Islands on October25, 1944. He was among the 800 survivors who were rescued from the sea after spendingover two days in the water. During his recuperation, he met a pretty young WAC namedWinifred (Harrington) Gense from Ellsworth, WI who was serving her country at the militaryhospital in Denver. They were married in December, 1946, and were married nearly 50 yearsbefore Winnie preceded him in death in 1996. He was also preceded in death by his youngestdaughter, Sue Bylander and two sisters – Lois D’Amore and Shirley Ellett.In his younger years, Clyde was an avid fisherman and spent many a day fishing on Bass Lake,and other lakes “up north.” He lived in the River Falls area for much of his life. He and Winniehad a small truck garden in the summer and were regular vendors at the RF Farmer’s Marketfor many years. He moved to Clear Lake, WI about 15 years ago. He loved to play blackjackand made regular runs to the casino at Turtle Lake to try his luck.He is survived by his children: Dan (Beth) Gunsallus – Somerset, WI, Sheryl Brown (DaveGuise) – Hudson, WI, Shirley Schrantz – River Falls, WI, and step-daughter Linda (Gense)Neuman. Also survived by nine grandchildren – Paul (Amy) Gunsallus, Cathy Gunsallus (JeffDoonan), Jenny Gunsallus, Jason (Liz) Brown, Nick Brown, Willy (Katie) Schrantz, JessieBylander, Andy Bylander and Tony Bylander, twelve great-grandchildren, and a sister JanetAllen.Arrangements are being handled by Cashman-Hill Funeral Home. Visitation will be held onThursday, July 24 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., with a brief memorial service following thevisitation. Private interment at St. Bridget’s Cemetery.
