Colonel (Ret) Manfred “Manny” Rorig

Colonel (Ret) Manfred Helmuth “Manny” Rorig, age 74, of Hudson passed away at the Christian Community Home after a brave fight against pancreatic cancer, on Friday, December 20, 2013.

He was born the son of Robert and Emma Rorig on 22 August 1939, in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Lakeview High School, Chicago in 1957 and earned his Bachelors degree from the University of Illinois, Champaign in 1961. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Army that same year.

Both the son of a Soldier and the father of a Soldier, Manny faithfully served his country as both an Army Officer and as a Department of the Army civilian for over 38 years. He served in Viet Nam from 1966-67 as a Logistics Officer where he was awarded the Bronze Star, he also held many positions throughout his military career working with petroleum and supply management and retired at the rank of Colonel in 1996. During his civilian career, Manny was Budget Analyst for the 88th Regional Readiness Command at Fort Snelling. He retired from civil service in 1999.

On July 20, 1963, he was united in marriage to Opal C. Anderson in Superior, Wisconsin. They raised their family in River Falls, WI. They moved to Hudson in 2002. Manny enjoyed reading, volunteering as a tax preparer for seniors, meeting with the King of Kings Men’s Group, acting as Quartermaster for his local Veteran’s of Foreign Wars (VFW) chapter, helping the Organization for Wildlife Learning (OWL’s) at Willow River State Park and spending time with family and friends at his Ladysmith cabin.

Manny was preceded in death by his beloved wife Opal, brother Kurt and nephew James.

Manny will remain in the hearts of his son Lieutenant Colonel Dean Rorig (Antje Jacobson) of Westmont, IL; grandson, Gabriel Rorig; Nieces Elizabeth Marxen and Miriam Low.

A Celebration of Manny’s Life will be held at 10:00a.m. 23 DEC 2013, at King of Kings Lutheran Church in Woodbury, Minnesota. Burial with full military honors will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Superior, Wisconsin. Visitation will take place one hour prior to services at the church, as well as from 4-630 p.m. on Sunday, 22 DEC 2013 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given in Manny’s memory to King of Kings Lutheran Church, the USO, and the Willow River OWLs.
