Craig Smith

Craig Norbert Smith, age 75 of Roberts died at Treasure Island Casino of an apparent heart attack. Craig was enjoying life with close friends when he died unexpectedly. Craig was born on March 21, 1940 in St. Paul; the son of Fred and Mildred Smith. He attended Holy Childhood Parochial School before graduating from Ramsey High School in Roseville.

As a young boy growing up, he learned the trade of iron working and a good work ethic. His dad began Fred’s Erection Company. But at a young age, his father passed away. Along with his mom, Craig stepped up to continue to the business. Not only did they keep it running, they grew the family business in which other family members joined in. He was a proud member of the Iron Workers Local 512 Union. Craig would marry Diane Rosenthal on November 26, 1960. To this union, sons Timothy and Craig were born. They lived in St. Paul until 1964, when they moved to Roberts to raise their family. In 1976, Craig and Diane began St. Croix Steel Erection Company. Craig enjoyed his hobby farm; which he farmed for over fifty years. They had horses, and cattle over the years. He loved the challenge farming brought and everyday issues it provided. Craig greatest thrill came from being an outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing trips to Alaska, or traveling to areas like Africa, Costa Rica, or Brazil to hunt or fish native species. He also enjoyed belonging to the New Richmond bowling league.

Craig is survived by his sons Tim smith, Craig Smith; grandchildren Emily, Charlie (Kate), Caroline; siblings Cynthia (John) Oetjen, Fred (Stephanie) Smith; as well as other special friends and relatives. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Diane, and brother Roger.

A Time to remember Craig will be Wednesday December 30th from 5 to 7PM at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home; 520 So. 11th Street, Hudson, Wisconsin. Private interment will be in the Warren Cemetery in Roberts. Memorials are preferred.
