Crystal A. Baer

Crystal A. Baer passed away peacefully at the age of 94 at the Christian Community Home in Hudson on Sunday, September 19, 2010. Crystal was born in Saint Paul, MN on November 9, 1915 to Olaf and Pauline (Arneson) Dahlby. Crystal’s family moved to Hudson in 1932 when her father bought and operated the Oslo Tavern (current site of San Pedro Café). During World War II, Crystal worked at the Twin Cities Ordinance Plant in New Brighton, MN. After the war she became a dental assistant in Dr. Peter A. Tweet’s office in Hudson, a job she held for approximately seven years. It was while working at the dental office that she met her future husband, Lyle Baer. The two were united in marriage on June 5, 1953 and the city girl moved to the Baer dairy farm in Hudson where she would reside for the next 54 years.

Crystal was known affectionately by many as “Mother Baer”, and will be remembered for her outgoing personality, sense of humor, and positive attitude. She and Lyle worked hard for many years on the family farm. After selling the cows in 1978, they had the freedom to spend their winters in Texas, which they both thoroughly enjoyed. Crystal REALLY loved to play Bingo, and also enjoyed playing cards, fishing, and dancing when she was younger. She also served as a volunteer at the Hudson Senior Center for about fifteen years – even after she became a resident herself of Pine Ridge Assisted Living.

Crystal was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Baer (1990); and her two brothers Otto (1929) and Gordon (2007). Crystal is survived by her daughter Beverly of Fridley, MN; sister-in-law Elva Dahlby of Hudson; nephew Darryl (Debi) Dahlby of Osceola, WI; nephew Eugene (Linda) Dahlby of Hudson; and niece Susan (Christopher) Watters of Hudson; seven grand-nieces and nephews; five great-grandnieces and nephews; as well as numerous friends.

Funeral Services for Crystal A. Baer will be held at 11:00 AM on THURSDAY, September 23, 2010 at the United Methodist Church, 1401 Laurel Ave., Hudson, WI with Pastor Bruce Stunkard officiating. Burial will follow at the Willow River Cemetery of Hudson. Visitation will be held 1 hr. prior to services at the church, and also from 5:00-8:00 PM on WED, September 22, 2010 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home, 520 11th Street S., Hudson, WI. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers. Services have been entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Hudson, WI. 715-386-3725
