David Charles Herum

David Charles Herum, 81, of River Falls, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 6, 2017 at United Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota.

David was born on February 16, 1935 in River Falls, Wisconsin, the son of Clarence and Ethel (Corcoran) Herum. He married Delores Earline Wider on April 21, 1957 in Ellsworth at the 1st Presbyterian Church, where they both had attended Sunday School, Youth Group and have been active and devoted members ever since.

David graduated from River Falls High School in 1953. He then attended the University of Wisconsin – River Falls where he earned his bachelor’s degree and later his Masters in Education. He also played basketball throughout his 4 years at UWRF, was leading scorer for 2 years, earned a spot as an All-American and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. David taught Science, Phy Ed, Computers and Math at the Stillwater School District for 36 years and coached boys/girls basketball, volleyball, and cross-country. David also thoroughly enjoyed keeping the clock/scoreboard for Stillwater’s boys and girls basketball, football, and wrestling for over 40 years…up until the day he fell ill on December 16, 2016.

David has been a faithful and active member of The Gideon’s International for over 40 years. He enjoyed distributing bibles on college campuses and visiting the inmates at the local jails – spreading God’s word and love.

Various roofing and construction jobs kept David busy during the summers while teaching. He did, however, find time to fulfill his and wife’s love of traveling. Whether visiting relatives in all parts of the US, going to Hawaii to celebrate 25 years together, site-seeing in Norway, or on an Alaskan Cruise with close friends, he enjoyed it all.

He is preceded in death by his parents, son, Timothy, and two brothers, Clayton and Merle Herum.

David is survived by his wife, Delores “Toots” Herum; two children, Daniel (Joann) Herum, and Elizabeth (Dan “Buck”) Siroin, both of River Falls, WI; daughter-in-law, Ginette Herum of San Antonio, TX; six grandchildren, Matthew (Jennifer) Herum, Nathan (Kristin) Herum, Danielle (Sean) Arriola, Ian (Kat) Herum, Derek Siroin, and Jacob Siroin; four great-grandchildren, Maranda, Jamison, Emery, and Kinsley; three brothers, Vernon (Carol) Herum, Gary (Barbara) Herum, and Eldon Herum.

Funeral Services for David will be 11:00 am, Saturday, January 14, 2017, at First Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth with Pastor Amy Kosari officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until time of service.Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, River Falls, WI, with the grandchildren as pallbearers.
