Donna Sue Schmidt

Donna Sue Schmidt, age 68, of Somerset, WI passed away peacefully May 19, 2016. She was attended by her devoted husband and loving son and daughter at Comforts of Home in Hudson. Donna was born February 10, 1948 in Ladysmith, WI, the daughter of George and Dagne (Johnson) Callies. Donna graduated from Bruce High School Class of 1966. She furthered her education at the University of Wisconsin River Falls, obtaining a teaching degree. On August 16, 1969 Donna wed the love of her life, Walter Ernest Schmidt, in Ladysmith, WI. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Joe and Annie. She taught Speech and English Literature at Somerset High School and coached the Forensics team. After 25 years of teaching Donna retired in 2001.

Outside of teaching Donna led an incredibly active lifestyle. She enjoyed playing tennis, golfing with family and friends, and was the match of anyone in ping pong. She also was fond of walking, biking, and cross country skiing. In her quiet time she appreciated quilting, crafting, and jigsaw puzzles. Donna and Wally were fortunate to share travels together and wintered 10 years in Apache Junction, AZ. There she delighted in hiking the mountains in the morning, playing water volleyball in the afternoon, and relaxing in the evening over a game of cards or cribbage. Donna’s gracious heart and fun spirit made her the life of the party. She was often the one to initiate singing, dancing, storytelling, and laughing until you cried around the bonfire at annual family reunions.

Donna will remain in the hearts of her loving husband, Wally; children, Joe (Sara) Schmidt of Appleton, WI and Annie (Amy) Hallstrom of Bayport, MN; granddaughter, Aspen Schmidt; siblings: Lowell “Jack” (Emma) Callies, Roger Callies, and Betty Daniels; and other loving relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Dennis, Donald, Gerald and Dave.

A Memorial Gathering will take place from 3-5 PM, with a 5 PM Service Saturday, June 4, 2016 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home, 520 S. 11th St., Hudson. Donations to the Alzheimer’s Association are preferred to flowers.
