Dorothy Elise Sather

Dorothy Elise Sather, age 89 of Baldwin Care Center and formerly of Hammond, passed away July 7, 2015 at the Baldwin Care Center. Dorothy was born on January 19, 1926 in Spring Valley; the daughter of Marvin and Ruby (Ritzman) Karnes. She attended elementary school in Hatchville before the family moved to Spring Valley where she graduated from Spring Valley High School. At a young age, she knew her calling was to help others. She furthered her education at the Red Wing Nursing School with a degree as a Registered Nurse. During these years, she began to court a young farmer from Wilson. She would marry her best friend, Glenn Sather, on September 11, 1947 at the Knapp Methodist Church. This union would be more than blessed with sons Rodney, Robert, and Richard.

Dorothy was a devoted wife, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Simply put, she loved people. She cherished time spent with family or visiting with friends playing cards or having a cup of coffee. She spent her entire life caring for others. She began working at the Baldwin Hospital helping the doctors in the emergency room or delivering babies. She loved working with the youth as a Sunday School teacher for Gethsemane, but also with the elderly. With years of experience under her belt, her care focused on the elderly as she worked many years for the American Heritage Care Center, Parkview Nursing Home, and then the Baldwin Care Center. In her spare time, she enjoyed weeding her flower garden and canning or freezing her bounties from her vegetable garden. She was a gifted seamstress who also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. In the cold months, Glenn and Dorothy loved wintering with friends in Mercedes, Texas.

Dorothy is survived by her sons, Rodney (Susan) Sather of Richfield, MN, Robert (Lori) Sather of Hammond, and Richard (fiancee Suzi Bibeau) Sather of Hammond; grandchildren, Rachel, Mark, Kelly (Chris), Mike, Erin (Steve), Dan, Martin (Lindsay), and Heather; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Owen, Zach, Owen, Lauren, and Blakely; and her sister, Mildred Hanson of Baldwin. Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; her parents; her brothers Jim (Elaine), Wayne (Dori); and brother-in-law Allen Hanson.

Funeral services for Dorothy will be held 11:00am on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 1350 Florence St. in Baldwin, with Pastor Carrie Anderson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Gethsemane on Saturday morning. Interment will take place at Baldwin Cemetery with her grandchildren serving as active casket bearers, and her great-grandchildren as honorary casket bearers. Memorials are preferred. Funeral services entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Baldwin.
