Dorothy W. Cumming

Dorothy Wilma Cumming, age 92, of Hudson, WI, died peacefully on July 31, 2018.

Dorothy was born on August 5, 1925 in Langham, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Jacob and Mamie (Thue) Tollerud. She attended the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon and obtained her Bachelor of Science and Registered Nurse degree. Dorothy worked as an R.N. for Saskatoon City Hospital until she became a dedicated stay at home mother.

Dorothy was united in marriage to James Francis Cumming on June 23, 1948 in Saskatoon. This union was blessed with seven children: Leslie Francis, Catherine, David, Charlotte Leslie, Brian, Robert, Dorothy-Jean, and one AFS daughter, Susan. Dorothy was a wonderful mother, always ready to listen to her children, offer good advice and encourage them to be their best. She loved all of her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews fiercely.

In her younger years, Dorothy was an exceptional athlete, winning many champion awards in track. As a child, she loved to ice skate with her father, and later with her husband and children. She enjoyed playing hockey on a women’s intramural team while at university.

Aside from her work as a nurse and homemaker, volunterring was her life mission. Dorothy found great reward in serving others and helping those in need. She volunteered with Girl Scouts, F.I.S.H., and at her home church, where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Dorothy also served as president of American Field Service (AFS). She was a humble servant of her community and was always generous with her time, love, and care.

Dorothy had many talents. She played piano from an early age and accompanied her family’s singing. As a child she won awards for her vocal music. Dorothy enjoyed preparing meals that were artistically presented culinary delights for her family and friends to enjoy. Her cinnamon rolls disappeared within hours of coming out of the oven. Above all, she was a hostess to anyone and everyone, being known for her teas and the caroling parties at Christmas.

Dorothy and her husband, James, loved to travel and see the world. Every time they returned from a trip, James and Dorothy had made new friends with whom they kept in touch.

Dorothy is survived by her six children (Catherine Margaret [Robert] Adams, James David [Carol] Cumming, Charlotte Leslie Cumming, Brian Douglas Cumming, Robert Lewis Cumming, Dorothy-Jean Yamamoto, and AFS daughter, Susan Ignacio [Yoshio] Maruyama), 14 grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and family friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband Dr. James Cumming, her first son Leslie Francis, her parents, and her sister Edith (Peter) Norma Day.

Dorothy will be remembered for her kindness, her generosity, and her unconditional love. Takk for alt, Mom.

A graveside service for Dorothy will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 27 at the Willow River Cemetery in Hudson. Later that afternoon, a memorial organ recital by Nils Halker will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, 901 Portland Ave., St. Paul, MN.
