Douglas Earl Young

Douglas Earl Young of River Falls, died on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at his residence. He was 84. Doug was born March 8, 1934 at home in Elmwood WI, to parents Glenn and Mabel (Larson) Young. Doug attended school in Elmwood and Ellsworth before moving to River Falls, where he would graduate from River Falls High School with the Class of 1952. Doug would attend UWRF for more than a year before enlisting in the United States Navy. On March 4, 1962, Doug was united in marriage to Mary L. Schanno. Their union in marriage would be blessed with four children, and over 37 years of love and devotion before Mary’s passing in 1999.

After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Doug worked a factory job before being hired at the Post Office. Doug worked for many years as a letter carrier in River Falls, before retiring in 1997. He valued the friendships made throughout the community over all those years. Doug had a love of music in his heart, especially for Polka! Music brought Doug all over the world, from local ballrooms and the Ellsworth Polka Fest, to playing upright bass and tuba in the Navy. Doug played with many polka bands, and as a musician in multiple recordings over the years. Doug was also a Green Bay Packers fan, and in later years, enjoyed rides through town, or down to Elmwood, to see and visit with the folks he knew. Above all though, Doug was a devoted family man, caring for his wife Mary, and cherishing time spent with his grandkids. He will be missed by many who knew and loved him.

Doug is survived by his children, Karen Young, Kathy Young, Steven (Amy) Young, and David (Nina Allen-Young) Young; grandchildren, Candice (Dave) Anderson, Jordan Young, Alicia Sanchez, Travis Mathiesen, and Jake Young; great-grandson, Trent Trealoff; brother, Roger Young; nephew, Glenn Young; brother-in-law, Mike Schanno; sister-in-law, Anita Eckert; as well as other relatives and good friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary; his parents; and his parents-in-law.

A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held from 4:00-8:00pm on Thursday, September 20th at the River Falls American Legion Post 121, 701 North Main Street in River Falls WI. To celebrate Doug’s life, stories and memories will be shared, and polka music will be played. Memorials are preferred to the discretion of the family. A private family committal will be held at Ft Snelling National Cemetery. Services have been entrusted to the O’Connell-Benedict Funeral Home of River Falls WI. 715-425-5644
