Douglas R. Matzek

Douglas Ralph Matzek, age 72 of Maiden Rock, WI, passed away on September 4, 2020 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN. Doug was born on May 11, 1948 in River Falls, WI to parents Ralph and Maxine (Collett) Matzek. He started his education at the Lincoln one room schoolhouse, proceeded to attend Ellsworth Junior High from 7th through 9th grade, and graduated from Plum City High School with the Class of 1966. He married his high school sweetheart Mary Klein on June 21, 1969. Out of this union, a daughter Lisa was born.

Farming alongside his father and brother was how Doug spent his entire career. Doug spent too many hours to keep track of either feeding and caring for cattle or milking cows, but field work was his true love, being the happiest while round baling hay. His second love was his gift of gab, being able to spend hours talking about anything to whoever would listen. His story telling ability mesmerized family, friends, and complete strangers, bringing smiles to all.

Doug will remain in the hearts of his wife of 51 years, Mary; his daughter, Lisa (Chris) Iverson; grandchildren, Alyssa and Isaac Iverson; sister, Nancy (Doug) Weiss; brother, Bob (Lori) Matzek; brother-and-sister-in-laws, Fred Finstad, Linda (Dan) DeLong, John (Nancy) Klein, Al (Sandy) Klein, Harry (Jan) Klein, Susan Sanders, Shirley (Todd Sueppel) Klein, Andy (Sandy) Klein, and Mike (Kanya) Klein; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Maxine Matzek; parents-in-law, Ed and Arlene Klein; and sister-in-law, Sandie Finstad.

A visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00am on Friday morning, September 11, 2020 for family and friends at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 212 Church Road in Plum City WI. Social distancing will be practiced, and use of masks will be required.

A private family service and burial will follow. Memorials honoring Doug may be directed to the discretion of the family. Funeral services are entrusted to the O’Connell-Benedict Family Funeral Home of Ellsworth, WI. (715) 273-4421
