Edna Atwood

Edna F. L. Evenson Atwood, age 92, long time resident of Hudson, WI, passed away on August 23, 2014 at the Christian Community Home in Hudson.

Edna was born on September 6, 1921 in Colfax, WI to Fred and Louise (Olson) Evenson. Her family moved to Hudson at the age of nine months, where she grew up with her siblings: Gladys, Eunice, Palmer, Gordon, and Donna Mae. As a child, she enjoyed swimming and roller skating in Bayport with her siblings, and worked at the bakery in Hudson, where she got her sweet tooth! She was a warm and loving person with a ready smile and friendly hello to all she met. She had a knack for making each one along way feel loved and special.

She graduated from Hudson High School in 1939, and then went to beauty school, where she worked in the trade for a few years, inspiring her sister Eunice to become a beautician as well. Edna had strong ties to Bethel Lutheran Church, and much of her social circle revolved around the church.

In 1941, Edna was united in marriage to Kemmen Atwood, a marriage that was blessed with four children: Kay, Paul, K. Edward, and Robert. All four children, like their mother, grew up in Bethel and were confirmed there.

Edna was a homemaker most her life, but worked at the county courthouse for nearly 10 years. She and Kem lived on a farm near the present site of the Hudson Country Club. Through the years, she was active in Ladies Aid and Mission Circle, holding several offices. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at Bethel. She also had fond memories of her time in Circle 1 – “The Bethelettes” and Circle 4 for the “older” women. In addition, she participated in the Mary Circle, the quilting group, and the mailing committee.

She is survived by her children: Kay (Jim) Hansen, K. Edward Atwood, and Robert  (Jane) Atwood; grandchildren: Terri Hansen, Melissa (Steve) Martin, Kelli Atwood, Lacie (Dan) Paige, Aimee (Jay) Sims, Curtis (Rebecca) Zimmerman, and Tony (Erika) Atwood; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kem; son, Paul; siblings; and many special friends and family members including Sherm Olson and Larry Blakeborough.

A visitation for Edna will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at O’Connell Family Funeral Home, 520 S. 11th St., Hudson. Funeral Service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 29, 2014 at Bethel Lutheran Church, 920 Third St., Hudson, with a visitation one hour prior to the service at church. Interment at Willow River Cemetery.

The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Kristin Severson and the caring and loving staff at Christian Community Home for the excellent care provided to mom during her stay.
