Evelyn Young

Evelyn Young, age 105, a longtime Red Wing, Minnesota resident, died peacefully on July 25, 2024, at the St. Crispin Benedictine Living Community in Red Wing. Evelyn was born on March 12, 1919, in Red Wing, Minnesota, the daughter of Louis and Ella (Alpers) Fellman. She was raised in Red Wing and graduated from high school there. On June 27, 1942, she married Robert “Bob” Young and moved to Ellsworth. This union was blessed with one daughter, Linda. Together, Evelyn and Bob owned and operated Ellsworth Bottling Works from 1951 to 1986. Bob was known as the ‘Beer Guy’ as he was the local beer distributor. Additionally, they operated Grantsburg Distributing for many years during that time. Evelyn was actively involved in making the business a success while Bob visited and delivered to customers.

Although Evelyn was a private person, she was active in many civic organizations in the community. She was a longtime member of the English Lutheran Church, where she was involved with the Ladies’ Guild, serving on the funeral committee and making pies for their Pierce County Fair booth. She was also an active member of the Ellsworth American Legion Auxiliary Post, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the local Moose Lodge chapter. Some of Evelyn’s passions were flowers and birds, especially feeding the hummingbirds at the cottage. She also enjoyed reading a good book or playing cards. One of Evelyn’s favorite things to do was relaxing at the family cottage overlooking the Mississippi River near Red Wing.

Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Linda (Robert) Kollasch; her sister, Florence ‘Tootie’ Fellman; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, in 1992; and siblings Harry ‘John’ (Evelyn) Fellman, Maynard (Lela) Fellman, Grace ‘Dolly’ (Jerry) Huron, LaVerne ‘Sonny’ (Patricia) Fellman, and Roland ‘Snooks’ (Elene) Fellman.

A funeral service for Evelyn Young will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 9, at the English Lutheran Church in Ellsworth. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, with family members serving as casket bearers. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the discretion of the family.
