George Wevers

George B. Wevers, age 84, lifelong resident of Baldwin, died unexpectedly Thursday March 10, 2011 at the Baldwin Care Center where he had been residing since February 2010. George was born to Bernard “Ben” and Wilhelmina “Minnie” (TeGrootenhuis) Wevers on December 11, 1926 in Baldwin, Wisconsin. He attended elementary school at Hammond Christian School, graduating second in his class. After graduation, he worked for his dad and several other farmers before serving in the US Army during the Korean War from 1950 to 1952. George then worked one year at JW Geurkink Trucking. He farmed for his dad south of Baldwin for nine years after which he started working for his brother Clarence; Wever’s Woodworking. He proudly worked there from 1960 until 1995.George was a faithful member of the Christian Reformed Church all of his life. He served 18 years as Elder and 35 years as Christian Reform’s custodian. Moreover, he served 18 years as a member of the Baldwin Christian School Board and drove bus for the Baldwin – Woodville School District for 37 years.

On December 23, 1950, George married Helen Meyer to which their children were blessed: Faye (Scott) Ross of St. Louis Park, Wanda (Loren) Potthoff of Englewood, CO, Tracey Luehrs of Farmington, MN, Vickie (John) Westing of Zeeland, MI.

George is survived by his wife and children; ten grandchildren Megan (Nick) Crosby, Katie Ross, Jason Potthoff, Pam Potthoff, Alex Luehrs, Nathan Luehrs, Elizabeth Westing, Emily Westing, Stephanie Westing, brothers/sisters Ted Wevers of Grand Rapids, MI, Clarence (Marilyn) Wevers of Baldwin, Rich (Sylvia) Wevers of Grand Rapids, MI, Rachel (Adrian) VanSomeren, of Baldwin, brothers/sisters-in-law Muriel Achterhof of Holland, MI, Lee Meyer of Janesville, WI, Norma Kennedy of Whitetail, WI, Kathy Wagonmaker of Muskegon, WI, Michael (Karen) Meyer of Holland, MI, as well as many nieces and nephews. George is preceded in death by his parents, brother John, sister Wilma, and brother-in-law Ray Meyer.

Funeral service for George Wevers will be 11AM Monday March 14th at the Christian Reformed Church in Baldwin with Pastor Anson Veenstra officiating. Burial will be in the Baldwin Cemetery with active casketbearers being Alex Luehrs, Nathan Luehrs, Nick Crosby, Greg Wevers, Tom VanSomeren, and Greg Jacobson. Full military honors will be provided by the Baldwin American Legion Post. Visitation will be on Sunday from 5 until 7PM at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Baldwin and one hour prior to the service at church on Monday. Memorials preferred.
