Gerald Spurgeon

Gerald A. Spurgeon age 86 of Hudson, died peacefully Friday April 22nd 2016 at his residence. Gerald was born on December 10, 1929 in Berlin, Wisconsin; the son of Gale and Mabel (Freitag) Spurgeon. He was raised in Berlin graduating from high school there. As a young man, he enlisted in the armed forces where he proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He would marry his best friend Shirley Ellis at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Berlin. Early in life, he began working at JC Penny as a stock boy. With determination and hard work, he earned the trust of his superiors and became a manager. From district to regional manager, he excelled at his job. He was instrumental in helping create the renowned JC Penny catalog. After 52 years, he retired after a rewarding career.

Gerald loved to work in his shop putzing on his wood projects. Shirley would give him the ideas, and Gerald would create toys, birdhouses, rocking horses or other trinkets to give away. He took great pleasure in his trips to Canada fishing, downhill skiing at Lake Tahoe, or taking Shirley on ‘World Tour’ Cruises. They enjoyed entertaining friends at their home and playing billiards.

Gerald will remain in the hearts of his children, Jon (Jill) Spurgeon and Susan Spurgeon; grandchildren: Alysa (Andy) Krueger, James Wagner, Kayla Hook, and Jenna Spurgeon; and great-grandchildren: Brittini, Alexis, Tayllor, Aiden, Addison, and Colten. Gerald is preceded in death by his parents Gale and Mabel (Freitag) Spurgeon, wife Shirley, and an infant child. 

Funeral service will be 10AM Thursday April 28th at Bethel Highlands Campus, 504 Frontage Road in Hudson with Pastor Bob Bipes officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Bethel Highlands Thursday morning. Casketbearers will be his family. Interment with full military honors will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Berlin, Wisconsin. Funeral services entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Hudson.
