Henry “Hank” George Hurtgen, age of 81, a beloved member of the Emerald community, passed away on August 22, 2024, at Hammond Health Center. Known for his passion for farming, his charismatic personality, and his engaging storytelling, Henry touched the lives of those around him in countless ways.
Throughout his life, Henry dedicated over 40 years of service on the town board of Emerald Twp. and actively participated in community events such as Memorial Day cemetery marches with the Emerald legion. He made many friends at Hammond Healthcare center. He enjoyed playing Bingo, watching movies with friends, and was always the life of the party with his witty sense of humor.
Henry’s social nature and love for sharing his wisdom led him to teach countless individuals about farming, passing down his knowledge to visiting cousins, neighbors, grandchildren, and local kids. His grandchildren fondly remember how they always put his hat backward – a trademark of his playful spirit. Henry’s family will always cherish memories of growing up on the farm. After selling the cows, he worked side by side in the catering business with Ruth. Henry was lovingly known as Mr. Ruth for years
He is survived by his; son David (Cindy) Hurtgen of Glenwood City; daughters Pam (Astley) Fisher of Chippewa Falls, and Rita (Dave) Thorson of Lake Elmo; grandchildren Matthew (Kenzie Merriman) Hurtgen, Mitchell Hurtgen, Marcus (Kirsten Majetich) Hurtgen, Steven Jake, Alex Jake, Diandre (Tia Henning) Fisher, Ella Thorson; great-grandchildren Grayson, Montana, and Peyton; sister Nola Bazille; plus, many extended relatives and friends. Henry was preceded in death by his: wife Ruth Hurtgen; parents Raymond and Martha Hurtgen; brothers Carl Hurtgen, Helmer “Bub” Hurtgen, Joe Hurtgen, and Brian Hurtgen; sister Mona Kobeska
A celebration of Henry’s life will be held on Wednesday, August 28th, 1pm-7pm, at the Baldwin Legion, where family and friends will gather to share memories, stories, and honor the legacy of a man who brought joy and laughter to all who knew him. He will be laid to rest next to his wife Ruth, at Greenwood Cemetery in Emerald, on Thursday, August 29th, 12pm, where he will be honored for his service in the Military.
