It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ilse Hancock, a beloved mother, friend, and cherished member of the Baldwin community. Ilse left us peacefully on December 8, 2024, at the age of 89. Born in Kaltenbrunn, Germany, she began her remarkable journey on June 14, 1935.
Ilse’s life was marked by love and resilience. In 1957, she married Joseph Alexander, and together they created a bond filled with laughter and generosity of spirit. In 1958, at just 23 years old, Ilse took a brave leap into a new world as she relocated to the United States. With her characteristic determination, she learned English by immersing herself in game shows—a testament to her indomitable spirit and willingness to embrace new beginnings.
Though tragedy struck in 1971 with the loss of Joseph, Ilse proved to be a pillar of strength as she found love again in 1975 with Richard Hancock. Throughout her life, her vibrant spirit shone brightly through her many passions. Ilse had a deep love for gardening, where her light truly blossomed through her exquisite flowers. She created a haven of warmth and beauty in her home, adorned with blooms and birds, a sanctuary that reflected her artistic flair and nurturing heart. Ilse cherished the moments spent painting with friends at the community center, and her kitchen was often filled with the delightful aromas of her baking and cooking, each meal a lovingly prepared gift to those she adored.
Ilse is survived by her daughters Lee (Les) Borst and Susanne (Jon) Swanson; grandchildren Lauren and Layton; step-daughter Nancy (Bill) Harshman; Step-grandchildren Jenny, Heather, Will, and Callie; plus many great grandchildren, extended family, and close friends. Ilse was preceded in death by her husbands Joseph Alexander and Richard Hancock; parents Josef & Maria Rettinger; step-daughter Ann (Rick) Carbury; step-son Bill Hancock. Her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
Friends and family will gather at a future date to celebrate her remarkable journey, sharing stories and reflecting on the joy she brought to their lives, as they lovingly remember the beauty, resilience, and spirit of Ilse Hancock.

So sorry to hear of the passing of IIse. She was one of my favorite customers at TMS Tire and Auto. I just asked my son Michael who now runs the shop if he had seen IIse. Always this time of year she would come in bearing gifts of breads or of course she had to always bring in brandy filled cherries that she got at Aldi’s.
What a special person she was. I will miss her. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
Ilse was a special lady. I loved all her stories she would tell me when she was checking in. She was always a ray of sunshine. I will miss her greatly. I will never forget her. Hugs to all the family. Chris MNO
