Irene Mildred Hilden

Irene M. Hilden was born on August 12, 1922 in Plum City, WI, to Hjalmar and Mabel (Larson) Nelson.  She graduated from River Falls High School and the University of Wisconsin – River Falls.

She taught for 25 years in the Ellsworth school system and in Pierce County, WI.

On June 1, 1943, she married Roland Hilden in San Antonio, TX.  They had four sons—Larry (Lila), Roger (Linda), Dale (Julie) and Jon (Monica).  They were charter members of Zion Covenant Church in Ellsworth, WI. She was a caring, creative person who loved quilting, baking, reading and writing to family and friends.

Following her husband’s death in 1990, she moved to Covenant Retirement Communities in Minneapolis, where she was part-time receptionist, co-chaired the prayer ministry, and volunteered at Colonial Acres Nursing Home.  She resided at Covenant Village of Golden Valley until her death on July 4, 2020.

Irene is survived by her four sons, ten grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, her sister Eleanor Peterson, and many nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Roland, grandson Aaron, sisters Hildur Peterson and Ruth McKinley, brothers Paul and Bernard, brothers-in-law Victor Peterson, George Peterson, and Don McKinley, and sister-in-law Raydell Nelson.

A private family memorial service was held on July 9, 2020 at the O’Connell-Benedict Funeral Home followed by interment at Bethel Covenant Church Cemetery.
