Jack R. McDonald, age 84, of Hudson, WI, passed away on October 1, 2022 at United Hospital in St. Paul, MN.  Born October 28, 1937, in Duluth, MN to Jack and Evelyn Resberg McDonald, he grew up in West Duluth and graduated from Denfeld High School. After high school, he attended the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics. After college he worked at Control Data in Minneapolis, which, in the 1960s, made some of the supercomputers used in the Apollo missions.  During this time, he served in the Army Reserves, earning the rank of Sergeant.

On August 5, 1967, Jack married Patricia Flottemesch in Callaway, MN, a marriage that would last 55 years and be blessed with two children.  He then joined MN Power (now Allete) where he worked for over thirty years, holding many roles, but ultimately leading their M&A efforts.  While at MN Power, Jack served on many charitable boards including the College of Saint Scholastica, The Girl Scouts, The 4-H Foundation, and the Salvation Army.  He retired as Executive VP of Finance.   Though he traveled often for work, he cherished the time he spent with his family. In 2009 he was blessed with grandchildren who were the light of his life in retirement.

His strong work-ethic and entrepreneurial spirit drove him to start multiple small businesses with his wife and others.  His intellectual curiosity was infectious, and, in his spare time, he read voraciously about business, military history, science, and the stock market, and many other things.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; children, Anne Howard-McDonald (Ron Howard) and John (Patty) McDonald; grandchildren, Ben and Claire; his brother, Robert McDonald, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; including his cousin Jan Resberg with whom he had a lifelong friendship.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

He was loved.  He is loved.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. on October 29, 2022 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1500 Vine St., Hudson with a visitation held one hour prior to the Mass at church. The Mass will be livestreamed through St. Patrick’s Facebook page HERE. Interment at Oneida Cemetery in Duluth.
