James “Jim” Matzek

James “Jim” Matzek, age 79 of Hager City, died Monday, April 29, 2019 at his home, surrounded by family. Jim was born March 15, 1940 in Red Wing, Minnesota, the son of Raymond Sr. and Irene (Schommer) Matzek. Jim graduated from Prescott High School. Jim was united in marriage to Sandra Kuehn on September 27, 1969 in a double wedding ceremony with his brother Charles, and Sandy’s sister, Rosanne, which was officiated by his brother, Fr. Bill Matzek.

Jim’s life was rooted in faith, family and farming. He was a hardworking, humble and kind man, and a devoted member of the St. Francis parish. Jim worked at Jacques Seed Company in Prescott for 36 years while dairy farming with his brother, Charles. He was a wonderful husband and dad, whose grandchildren meant the world to him. Jim cheered for the Packers and the Brewers, and loved attending the sporting events of his grandchildren.

Jim will remain in the hearts of his loving wife of nearly 50 years, Sandra; his seven children, Dennis (Katy), of River Falls; Kenny (Amy) of Beldenville, Cyndy (Mike) Bayer of Hager City, Andy of Hager City, Angie (Jessy) Marks of Ellsworth, Mark (Jessica) of Ellsworth, and Tim (Brooke) of Hudson; his eighteen grandchildren, Wyatt, Derek, Madeline, Olivia, Owen, Alex, Ryan, Ian, Mackenzie, Kayley, Adrienne, Lexi, Aubrey, Natalie, Gabriel, Alton, Alyce, and Ruth. He is also survived by his ten siblings, Raymond Jr. (Janice), John (Joyce), Jeanette (Jim) Hovel, Rita Matzek, Charles (Rosanne), Theresa (Bob) Goehring, Norman (Mary), David (Terry), Bernard (Nancy), and Ron (Jane); mother-in-law, Sophia Kuehn; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Sr. and Irene (Schommer) Matzek; his brother, Reverend Fr. William Matzek; and father-in-law, Donald Kuehn.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Jim Matzek will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at St. Francis Catholic Church, 231 Woodworth St. in Ellsworth WI. Visitation will be held at church beginning at 9:00am, until the time of Mass. A private family burial will take place at St. Mary’s Big River Catholic Cemetery.
