Janice Marie Doonan, age 74 of Hudson, died Friday, November 10, 2017 at Regions Hospital in St. Paul following complications related to cancer. Jan was born on September 23, 1943 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Leonard and Angela (Couette) Skalicky. She was raised in the Twin Cities where she attended schools and would later graduate from the Hudson High School in the class of 1961. In 1965, she married Dennis Doonan, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hudson. To this union, three sons were born—Steve, Jeff, and Charlie.  Jan and Dennis opened the Valley House in St. Joseph Township and operated the business for many years. Jan worked as secretary to Minnesota’s Commissioner of Banking prior to accepting a position with the city of Hudson. She worked as an administrative assistant at Hudson’s City Hall for over 20 years.

Jan loved to take pictures and create scrapbooks of special moments in her life.  She enjoyed her kitties, her flower gardens, and baking goodies. She had a love for music, which she shared with the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Praise Choir and the River City Chorale. She was actively involved in the community and spent time at the Phillips Center for Arts taking tickets, ushering and as a tour guide. Furthermore, she loved the friendships she developed over the years there, which they called that ‘A-Team’. She was also very active in her high school graduating class as she help coordinate class reunions.

Jan will remain in the hearts of her sons, Steve Doonan, Jeff (Cathy) Doonan, Charlie Doonan; grandchildren, Abby (Greg) Franko, Haley and Hunter Doonan; sisters, Judy (Don) Zappa, Jackie (Robert) Borglund; and her special nieces, Lisa and Gina Zappa, and Jessica (Dustin) Sutton. Her parents, Leonard and Angie precede her in death.

Mass of Christian burial for Jan will be 11 AM Thursday, November 16 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hudson. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with casketbearers being Abby Franko, Haley Doonan, Hunter Doonan, Lisa Zappa, Gina Zappa, and Jessica Sutton. Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 15 from 6 to 8 PM at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Hudson, as well as one hour prior to the mass at church Thursday morning. Memorials are preferred to the family discretion.
