Jean Afdahl

Jean Virginia Afdahl, age 94 of Baldwin, beloved wife of Kenneth died Thursday February 12, 2015 at the Baldwin Care Center. Jean was born October 15, 1920 in River Falls, Wisconsin; the daughter of Alfred and Bertha (Jensen) Christensen. She was raised in River Falls where she attended a country elementary school prior to graduating from River Falls High School. She would further her education by receiving her teaching degree at the Normal School in River Falls. On December 6, 1943, she was united in marriage to her best friend; Kenneth Afdahl in Berkley, California. This union would be blessed with three children; Dan, Steven, Judy. Jean loved being surrounded by children as teaching meant the world to her. She began working in Niles, Michigan before teaching many years in Red Oak, Iowa and Dodgeville, Wisconsin. She retired from teaching in 1983.

Jean appreciated the simple things in life. She loved the tranquility of feeding the birds, reading a good book, or tending to her floral garden. She enjoyed baking, as pies were her favorite. She loved traveling to special places with Ken; such as New York, Denmark, and Norway. Most recently, they traveled to Washington, DC. She also took great pleasure from jumping in their motor home and heading to Texas for the winter.

Jean will forever remain in the hearts of her husband of 71 years Kenneth; children Dan (Carlene) Afdahl of Sioux Falls, SD, Steven (Judith) Afdahl of Iowa Falls, IA, Judy (Roger) Evans of Hammond; grandchildren Jennifer (Sean) Coleman, Calane Doble, Peter (Tiffany) Afdahl, Michael (Jocelyn) Afdahl, Emily (Matt) Gibson, Chris (Amy) Evans, Scott Evans, Kent Evans; Great grandchildren Gwen, Maddie, and Arya Coleman; Greta Doble, Tanner and Katie Afdahl, Tyler Sather, Mia, Kayla, and Lela Evans, Lee Afdahl, Tyler Gibson, Nicole and Nathan Painter. Jean is preceded in death by her granddaughter Ingrid Afdahl, sister Renee (Art) Anderson, and infant brother Charles Christensen.

Funeral service for Jean Afdahl will be 11AM Tuesday, February 17th at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Baldwin with Pastor Carrie Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Baldwin Cemetery with her grandsons as urn bearers. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church on Tuesday. Memorials are preferred to SCC Kids Club Fund. Funeral services entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Baldwin.
