Jean Shirley (Owens) Tubman, age 87 of Hammond WI, died on Friday, November 13, 2015 at the Baldwin Care Center. Jean was born February 10, 1928 in Pleasant Valley, WI, the daughter of Fred and Stella (Jorstad) Owens. She grew up on the family farm, and was baptized and confirmed at the Rush River Lutheran Church in River Falls. Jean was a basketball cheerleader at Baldwin High School, and graduated in 1946. She attended the River Falls Normal School where she played on the school’s basketball team and received certification to teach elementary school.  She taught at the Kinnikinnic Country School and the Mann Valley School for several years. Jean was united in marriage to Vincent “Vince” Tubman on June 4, 1950 at the North Rush River Lutheran Church. Their union in marriage was blessed with four children.

In 1950 Jean and Vince moved to La Crosse, WI where Jean continued teaching, and four years later moved to Pepin, WI where she worked as a substitute teacher and taught Sunday School. In 1960, the family moved to Hibbing, MN, and then to Brooklyn Center, MN in 1964. In retirement Jean and Vince settled in their hometown of Hammond where they became active members of the community and members of Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple also loved to travel around the U.S. and internationally to Europe and Scandinavia.

Jean loved to quilt and was always working on sewing quilt squares for her church. Jean was an avid gardener. She enjoyed flowers and planted a bountiful garden that supplied lots of fruits and vegetables for canning and for sharing with the neighbor children and the senior center. She was also a great baker, supplying her family and church bazaars with pies, cookies and traditional Scandinavian rosettes and krumkaka. Jean enjoyed watching basketball, especially the Golden Gophers, and could recall statistics of many Big Ten teams and athletes.

Jean will remain in the hearts of her sons, Michael (Christine) of Wisconsin Dells WI, and Mark (Carolyn) of Onalaska WI; daughters, Linda (Dave) Lindquist of Glenwood City WI, and Bethany (Keith) Johs of West Fargo ND; eleven grandchildren; many great-grand and great-great grandchildren; brothers, Alan (Jeanne) Owens of Hammond, and Fredric (Christa) Owens of West Des Moines, IA; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Vince; parents, Fred and Stella Owens; and brother, Orville Owens.

Funeral Services for Jean Tubman will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 1250 Broadway St., Hammond WI, with Pastor Michael Briggs officiating. Burial will follow in the Hammond Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at church, and also from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home, 1010 Newton St., Baldwin WI. Memorials are preferred to the Trinity Lutheran Church.
