Jean VandeBerg-Burke, age 92, passed away on November 27, 2023 at Baldwin Care Center with her family by her side.
Jean was born in Spring Valley, WI to Lester “Lee” and Helma (Hanson) Herald. She graduated from Baldwin High School and continued her education at University of Wisconsin River Falls where she earned her degree in elementary education. Jean married James VandeBerg on July 14, 1954 and together they were blessed with two daughters. Jim sadly passed away in 1987.
Jean worked as a kindergarten teacher in Manitowac, Virginia, and Massachusetts before starting her family in Baldwin, she then became a substitute teacher. After Jim passed, Jean enjoyed working at Town and Country Dress Shop where she made lifelong friends. She also spent some time working at the Woodville Senior Center. She was active at Gethsemane Lutheran Church and her faith was a big part of her life. Jean did find love again in LuVerne Burke, and the two were married on October 31, 1998, sadly LuVerne passed away just 3 months after their wedding.
Jean was known for her spunky personality that she still expressed even at the very end. She was never shy to give her opinion or to ask you yours and was also very young at heart, she loved to play with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, who affectionately called her G.G. She even taught each one of them how to drive at her favorite spot, the cemetery. Her hobbies included reading, yard work, and volunteering at the Baldwin Hospital Auxiliary and delivering Meals on Wheels.
She will remain in the hearts of her children Linda (Loren) Rochester and Mary (Larry) Haugen; grandchildren Jessie (Brad) Fritter, Tony (Kate) Rochester, Laura Diaz, and Grant Haugen; great grandchildren Mollie, Karlie, Emery, Hudson, and Sylvie; sister-in-law Ellen VandeBerg-Blom; her beloved bonus family, the Schumachers, Tom and Jo, Chris, Dan, Katie, and Craig, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her first husband Jim VandeBerg and second husband LuVerne Burke; parents Lee and Helma Herald, brothers Duane (Anita and Jeannette) Herald, and Ted Hanson; brothers-in-law Roy (Mona) VandeBerg and Jack Blom; niece Trudy Loney.
Services for Jean will be held on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Baldwin, WI. Visitation will start at 10 am with a service starting at 11 am.
Oh Jean… aka Mother Vandy or Jean the Machine as I liked to call you. You were always ready with arms wide open for a hug and ready to share your home, special treats and more! I’ll always remember fondly my many visits with Mary to Baldwin during our college years. In the years that followed, it was just so special to spend time with you. You made everything fun!! Thanks for the memories!! 💛 Dos
