John ”Jack”” Dalton, age 85 of Hammond, died December 8, 2015 at the Parkview Care Center in Woodville. Jack was born on May 5, 1930 in St. Paul, Minnesota; the son of James and Evelyn (Pierre) Dalton. He attended elementary school in Lake Elmo prior to graduating from the Stillwater High School. As a young man, he was drafted in the armed forces serving in the Army in Germany, during the heightened days of the Cold War with Russia. On October 3, 1953, he was united in marriage to Carolyn “Kary” Rhein at St. Pascal’s Catholic Church in St. Paul. This union would be blessed with children John, Steven, Debra, Thomas, David and Julie. Jack was a lifetime farmer, who loved the serenity of a plowed field or the smell of diesel from his International Harvester tractors, combines, and trucks. He worked many hours providing for his family, teaching them the rules of hard work. Furthermore, he enjoyed the beauty of the highways as he and Kary drove semi for many years. Initially, he worked for Witte Trucking in the Twin Cities but would later own and operate his own 18-wheelers.
Life was about the family and the farm. Jack loved visiting with others and attending auctions, especially when he had a chance to barter or work the price down. Machinery Hill, at the Minnesota State Fair, was a yearly visit. Other good memories included traveling, spending time with his longtime friends Mel Arcand and cousins Don Lee and Jimmy Dalton, watching All-Star wrestling, and enjoying a cold can of Old Milwaukee beer.
Jack will be fondly remembered by his wife, Kary; children: John (Jeannie) of Emerald, Steve (Sandy) of Somerset, Debra (Joe) Clennon of Hammond, Thomas (Terry) of New Richmond, David of Hammond, and Julie of St. Paul; 13 grandchildren: Christina (Mike), Thomas, Nicole (Derek), Melissa (Matt), Michelle (Ed), Laura (Gabe), Lindsay (Ryan), Jason, Cody, Scott, Crystal, Dave (Liz), and Mike (Shannon); 13 great grandchildren: Mara, Tessa, Colton, Mason, Knox, Emma, Addy, Isabelle, Alex, Brady, Landon, Declan, and Finley; sister, Joann Meath of Oakdale; sisters-in-law, Diane Dalton of Woodbury, Libby Dalton of New Richmond, Nancy Dalton of St. Paul; and many nieces and nephews.
Jack is preceded in death by his parents James and Evelyn (Pierre) Dalton, and brothers Robert, Richard, and Pierre.
