John “John Pal” L. Hilsen

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of John “John Pal” L. Hilsen, who left this world on June 11, 2024, at the age of 61. Born in St. Louis Park, MN, on February 17, 1963, John leaves behind a legacy of kindness and generosity that touched the lives of all who crossed his path.

John had many talents and was known for his skill as a home builder and remodeler. He was a craftsman dedicated to his work. He poured his heart into each home he built or made better. John found great joy in running into past clients and witnessing the lasting impact of his creations. John was taught to work hard by his father, by working the western oil fields, and by the second family he found as a young man while living and working on a horse ranch just West of Minneapolis.

Beyond his career, John loved animals and nature, finding solace in the presence of his horses, cats, and the beauty of the trees, birds, and flowers on his land. We can probably thank his time at the ranch for encouraging his love of people and all living things. John loved music and often entertained friends by playing guitar and singing John Denver songs around the campfire.

His faith in the Lord guided him out of life’s valleys, instilling in John a sense of purpose and strength that he shared with those around him. John’s warm and caring nature endeared him to all. His willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need and his unwavering loyalty to his family and friends will be remembered gratefully. The legacy of John Pal will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, as his spirit continues to inspire kindness and compassion in the world. John will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his sister Holly (John) Widen; nieces and nephews Rick (Katie) Widen, Rachel (Reid) Wixson, Mari (Peter Stenross) Widen; great-nieces and nephews Rosie and Jerry Widen, Daniel and Eva Wixson; sister-in-law Susan Jennelly; uncle Lowell Hilsen; and many loving cousins, family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Dick and Violet Hilsen; brother Ben Hilsen; sister Andrea Hilsen; and beloved grandparents, aunts, and uncles.

A service of remembrance to honor and celebrate John’s life will be held at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church, 5025 Knox Ave. S. Minneapolis, MN 55419 on Monday, June 24 at 2:00 p.m., with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Memorials can be dedicated to Mount Olivet Music Ministry.
