John Mercord, of Prescott, WI, gained his angel wings and passed away at the age of 77 on January 2nd, 2022, due to complications from COVID-19. In his true, strong-willed (stubborn) fashion, he fought until the very end. His last moments were peaceful and he was surrounded by his wife and daughter.

John was born to Mildred (Cernohous) and Clinton Mercord on May, 28th, 1944 in Prescott, WI. He married Carol Schommer on May 13th, 1967. They were blessed with a daughter, MaryLee. John graduated from Prescott High School in 1962 and enlisted in the US Army Reserves from 1963-1969. He then attended Lakewood Junior College in White Bear Lake, MN and received a 2 year Marking Degree in 1971. He and his wife, Carol, opened up a clothing store, The Clothes Attic, in Downtown Prescott. John then worked for Primerica Securities and Insurance. He was a Rural Postal Carrier for the United States Postal Services for 24 years before he retired in 2014.

His wife, Carol, was the love of his life and they had many adventures together. In the earlier years they enjoyed bowling league, snowmobiling and Friday nights out and backyard parties with neighbors and friends. In later years they enjoyed a little traveling, going out to eat at different restaurants, weekend drives that often lead them to a casino, and spending time with their granddaughters. His daughter, MaryLee, was his pride and joy. He was a strong and loving father and his guidance and advice were a strong foundation for her. He was always on the sidelines cheering MaryLee on as her biggest fan for sports, her education, her career, and the family she built. He loved his son-in-law, Derek, dearly and enjoyed working on household projects together and teaching him tricks of the trade. Last, but definitely not least, he loved his granddaughters, Aubrey and Isabel, more than life itself. They laughed a lot together telling silly jokes while he taught them to play the harmonica, sing old songs, and the best ways to jump rope.

John was one-of-a-kind and had a one-of-a-kind humor! He was a smart-aleck and family and friends were always entertained by his stories. He had a child-like spirit and had a way of bringing life to a party. One of his favorite things to do before he got really sick, was create concrete art like bird baths and benches. He had a real talent for it and made him really happy. In earlier years he enjoyed working on cars, tinkering with electronics, hunting, fishing, and trap shooting. Although a jokester, he was a real softie inside and had a love for nature and animals of any kind. This includes bugs, and was known for saving any insects found in the house and safely setting them outside to fly free. He enjoyed bird watching and his favorite was the hummingbird.

John is survived by his wife, Carol, of 54 years, daughter MaryLee (Derek) Romens, granddaughters, Aubrey and Isabel Romens, siblings Kay (Doug) Reinhardt, Fred (Sharon) Mercord, Joan (Jim) Baker, sisters-in-law Alice (Armbruster) Mercord and Bunny (Winters) Mercord, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mildred (Cernohous) & Clinton Mercord, Mother and Father-in-law Margaret & Eugene Schommer, brothers Ron Mercord, Bob Mercord, Dick Mercord, and sister-in-law Muriel (Dopkins) Mercord.

His passion and love for his family was unwavering and his infectious smile and laugh will live on forever.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 2:00pm Thursday, June 2, 2022 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Parish: 269 Dakota St. S, Prescott, WI 54021 with Father George Szews officiating. A Visitation will be one hour prior to the start of Mass. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.
