John Newton, age 80 of Baldwin, formerly of Hammond died Saturday July 28th 2018 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

John was born on January 26, 1938 in Spring Valley, Wisconsin; the son Arnold and Gladys Newton. He was raised in Baldwin where he attended Riverside Country School prior to graduating from the Baldwin High School. During this time, he enlisted in the Army Reserves prior to being called up for the Berlin Crisis. On April 18, 1959, he was united in marriage to Judith Sather at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Baldwin. This unit would be blessed with three children, Jayne, Jay, and Jennifer. Early in life, John worked as a meat cutter for Lloyd Eggen in Baldwin prior to he and Judy purchasing Edwin Larson’s grocery store in Hammond. They owned and operated the grocery store from 1959 to 1986 when they sold the business. Retirement didn’t last long, as he began working for Donaldson’s in the manufacturing plant until he retired age of 65.

For those that knew John, they knew of his Love of golf. He was one of the original founders of the Hammond Golf Course. To this day, he takes great pride in promoting and helping when he can. At home, he had a makeshift golf course for wiffle balls and hazard spots including ‘Lake Judy’. Furthermore, he made his own golf clubs and had a great enjoyment watching his grandchildren learn the sport. He also enjoyed deer hunting with the guys and reminiscing at Woodside Lounge (his brothers barn). His family was first and foremost. So many good family vacation memories were had, especially trips to Minocqua Wisconsin. Later in life, he and Judy enjoyed wintering in Alabama. John was also a founder of Trinity Lutheran Church, former member of the Hammond Fire Department, Hammond Village board, Trinity Church council, and Active member of the Lions Club. He also took pleasure in it earlier in life helping with local city firework displays.

John will forever live on in the hearts of his wife and best friend Judy; children Jayne (David) Murphy, Jay (Barbie) Newton, Jennifer (Louie) Johnson; grandchildren Ricky (Dana) Shemon, Michael (Ashley) Murphy, Jake (Samantha) Murphy, Sammy (Joe) Warner, Joey (Mariah) Shemon, Jon (Shaunna) Newton, Zach Newton, Logan Newton; Great grandchildren Lilly Shemon, McKenna Tennessen, Gordon Murphy, Henley Murphy, Sullivan Murphy; brother Duane Newton; siblings-in-law Inez Newton, Marlys Newton, Don Lind; Douglas Berkner; many nieces, nephews, and countless friends. John is preceded in death by his parents; beloved grandson Luke Murphy, siblings Verlyn Newton, Delores Lind, Earl Newton, siblings-in-law; Norma Grundy, Carol (Gordon) Zillmer, Karen Berkner.

Funeral service for John Newton will be 10AM Saturday August 4th at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hammond. Burial with full military honors by his fellow Legion members will be in the Hammond Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 4pm to 7pm also at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hammond as well as one hour prior to the service at church Saturday morning. Memorials are preferred to the discretion of the family.
