Joan ‘Joni’ K. Salmon, age 61, of Hudson, WI, passed away Saturday December 19th, 2020 at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN. Joni was born on March 12, 1959, and grew up in Hudson, WI with her parents John & Harriet Salmon. Joni took great comfort in the little joys in life. She enjoyed watching soap operas, being around animals, (especially cats & dogs), & playing Rummy 500 with anyone who had the time for a game. Joni was quite the socialite; she was always writing to friends & family, receiving letters, & chatting on the phone. Joni most loved spending her time with her mom, Harriet. The pair would often take shopping trips together followed with some lunch or dinner with Joni’s favorite: Diet Mountain Dew! Joni’s pure spirit & big, loving heart will be missed dearly by all who were blessed to have known her in this life.

Joni will remain in the hearts of her brother Tim (Roxane) Salmon of Hudson; sister, Carla (Randy) Klawiter of Cadott, WI; niece Christina (Ben) Skoglund of Seattle; great nephew, Theodore; as well as many special aunts/uncles & cousins. Joni is preceded in death by her parents, & brother, Michael.

A Private Memorial Service will be held at 11AM, Wednesday, December 23rd at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home. This service will be live-streamed, please check back in before the service for the link. Burial will be in the family plots at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Cylon, WI. • I have been a friend of Joan’s for many years, having met her when she decided to move from her parents’ farm and into community living; I worked for the state funding source used to support Joni. We remained friends all these years and chatted on the phone regularly. Joan was a unique individual who despite her disability, had dreams of living independently in her own apartment, having a boyfriend and getting a job……a life like she observed everyone else living. Joan and I maintained our friendship for over 25 yrs; I will think of her often and miss her every day. Rest in peace my old friend.

    • To Joni’s siblings.,

My Mom Donna DeWitte was a very good friend of your Mom. Perhaps you remember the sewing club and group of classmates that got together for lunch. I wanted to express my condolences to all of you on Joni’s passing. My Mom talked of Joni often and the stories your Mom told her. Peace and Hugs to all of you.

    • We had planned to visit family and friends in the midwest this past summer, but because of COVID were unable to. We had looked forward to visiting with Joni, but had to make due with talking to her on the phone. I always enjoyed our conversations – she had some interesting insights into what was going on AND we always talked about politics. I’ll miss those chats.

    • Joni holds a very special place in my heart. I had the great pleasure of caring for her for years. She will be greatly missed and loved forever!
