Joseph Herbert Schommer

Joseph H. Schommer, age 85, of River Falls, WI passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 9, 2015. He was born on March 27, 1930 in Big River, WI to John J. and Dora (Jansa) Schommer, the youngest of 12 siblings. Joseph was a 1949 graduate of Prescott High School. On November 24, 1953, he married Donna Young at St. Bridget Catholic Church in River Falls.

Joseph served in the US Navy from 1955-1957 as a Plankowner on the USS Saratoga. He was the proud owner of Joe’s Valley Bar and Grill, which he purchased in 1958 and successfully operated for 42 years. An avid Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers fan, he loved to spend his time cheering on his favorite teams and attended all Green Bay Packer Super Bowl victories, with the exception of 2010 Super Bowl XLV, which he watched from home with family and friends. He enjoyed travelling, playing Euchre, and spending time with his grandchildren, teaching them to play cards.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents and eleven siblings, and many other beloved members of his large, extended family. He is survived by his wife of 61 ½ years, Donna, his son William (Sue) Schommer, his daughter Beth (Massimiliano Toffolon) Schommer, grandchildren William II, Kurt and Lance Schommer and Nicholas and Emily Toffolon, along with several nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 12 at St. Mary’s Church in Big River, Wis. by Father Bill Matzek. Visitation will also be at St. Mary’s Church in Big River, Wis. from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 11, as well as prior to the service on Tuesday, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be following the service in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
