Kenneth Afdahl

Kenneth Afdahl, age 94 of Baldwin died Sunday December 13th 2015 at the Baldwin Care Center. Kenneth was born on July 26, 1921 in Pleasant Valley Township; the son of Elmer and Inga (Heleve) Afdahl. He attended Valley View Elementary School prior to graduating from the Baldwin High School. He furthered his education at the Normal School in River Falls earning his teacher’s certificate. He entered the ROTC and enlisted in the Armed Services where he proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. He saw combat in the South Pacific as Lieutenant JG aboard the mine sweeper USS YMS-81.

He taught a short time at Randolph High School instructing agriculture and industrial arts. Following this, he entered the agriculture industry selling feed. He worked many years for Master Mix, which would become Central Soya. On December 6, 1943, he was united in marriage to Jean Christensen in Berkley, California. To this union, children Dan, Steven, and Judy were born.

Ken enjoyed working outside. He loved getting his hands dirty in his flower or vegetable gardens. He planted many trees during his lifetime and took great pleasure coming back to the farm to make sure they were well manicured. He was very handy and enjoyed tinkering around the house and farm. He loved traveling to special places with Jean; such as New York, Denmark, and Norway. Most recently, they traveled to Washington, DC to celebrate their wedding anniversary. He and Jean also looked forward to their motor home and heading to Texas for the winter.

Kenneth is survived by his children, Dan (Carlene) Afdahl of Sioux Falls, SD, Steven (Judith) Afdahl of Iowa Falls, IA, and Judy (Roger) Evans of Hammond; grandchildren: Jennifer (Sean) Coleman, Calane Doble, Peter (Tiffany) Afdahl, Michael (Jocelyn) Afdahl, Emily (Matt) Gibson, Chris (Amy) Evans, Scott Evans, and Kent Evans; great-grandchildren: Gwen, Maddie, and Arya Coleman; Greta Doble, Tanner and Katie Afdahl, Tyler Sather, Mia, Kayla, and Lela Evans, Lee Afdahl, Tyler Gibson, Gabby Gibson, Nicole and Nathan Painter. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean; his parents, Elmer and Inga (Heleve) Afdahl; sisters, Vivian Afdahl and Marjorie (Earl) Molland; brothers, Eldridge (Eva), Harley; and granddaughter, Ingrid Afdahl.

A Memorial Service for Kenneth Afdahl will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, December 17, 2015 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Baldwin. Burial with full military honors will be in the Baldwin Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church Thursday morning. Memorials are preferred to Adoray Home Health and Hospice. Funeral services have been entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Baldwin, WI. 715-684-3434
