Larry Sandfort

Larry Sandfort, age 76, of Bloomington, MN died March 8, 2018, surrounded by his family at Hennepin County Medical Center. A fall on the ice February 27, 2018, caused a traumatic brain injury. Special thanks to the physicians, nurses and chaplains for the loving care he and the family received at HCMC. Larry was born May 15, 1941 in Baldwin, WI, to Clarence and Irene (Renskers) Sandfort. He was raised in Baldwin, attended Hammond Christian School and graduated from Baldwin High School. He continued his education at Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis earning a degree in Television and Radio Repair.  He was hired by IBM and furthered his education with them. June 5, 1965, he married Marion Hofman. They raised two children, Sherri and Curt, and welcomed their spouses and five grandchildren to complete the family circle. Larry had a long rewarding career with IBM as a Customer Engineer until his retirement. After one year off, he returned to work on Part Time basis, and continued to work for another 14 years. Throughout his career, he alway made time to return to Baldwin, where he enjoyed “diesel hours” during planting and harvest seasons. He was interested in photography; was an inventor, an engineer, a fixer, a do-it-yourselfer. He enjoyed everything boating: water skiing, fishing, and camping with family and friends; and especially cruising and enjoying the beauty of the St. Croix River.  He had a sound Christian faith and appreciated good music. He sang in quartets and the church choir, and enjoyed listening to choral, piano and organ music. Larry loved helping other people.  If someone had a problem or issue, Larry could always find a way solve it. He had a very inquisitive mind; he knew something abouteverything and if he didn’t know enough about it, he would ask questions to learn more. Larry was meticulous and persnickety about how things were done. His friends called it, doing it ‘the Larry-way”; he invented many solutions. We will remember

Larry’s smile and his laugh. Larry will remain in the hearts of his wife and best friend Marion; children Sherri and husband Dominique, grandsons Luc, Paul, and Jacques Sémon; Curt and wife Kristen, granddaughters Alexandra and Lauren Sandfort; sister Rosalie and her husband (and Larry’s good friend) Murray Lestrud; relatives and friends. Larry was fiercely loyal to his friends, and often considered them family.

Visitation with the family will be Thursday, March 29, from 9:00am-10:00am at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Baldwin. Burial will follow immediately at the Baldwin Cemetery with prayers led by Jerry VanSomeren. A Celebration of Life will be at 2:00pm at Calvary Church, 5300 France Avenue South, Edina, MN. Pastor Lester Van Essen will lead the worship service. Immediately following worship will be a time of visiting with the family and sharing “Larry stories”. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to MN Teen and Adult Challenge, Calvin Christian School, VEAP, or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
