Laurence Vier

Laurence Vier, age 81, of Baldwin, Wisconsin, died peacefully on the morning of Friday, January 13, 2017, at the Christian Community Home in Hudson, Wisconsin. Laurence was born October 11, 1935 in Hammond WI to parents Clarence and Catharine (nee Roberts) Vier. He attended school in Hammond and graduated from Hammond High School in 1953. Laurence met the love of his life, Madolyn Gaustad, at a dance held at the Wilson Nightclub. The couple united in marriage on November 26, 1955, at the Peace Lutheran Church in Baldwin. They were blessed with seven beautiful children and made homes in Hammond, St. Croix Beach MN, and Hudson before finally settling down in Baldwin in 1971.

Laurence worked for 39 years at Andersen Windows. He enjoyed road trips, farming, dancing, playing card games, such as euchre, 500 and cribbage, and traveling with Madolyn, whether to Lake Superior or all across Europe. Laurence liked to deer hunt, and while at the cabin, was known for making a truly great chili. He very much enjoyed cooking and baking, and was one of a select few trusted to help Madolyn with her famous potato salad. In 1987, Laurence and Madolyn purchased the Northside Cafe in Baldwin, where they could be found joking and laughing together for ten years before fully retiring. Above all, Laurence cherished the time spent “spoiling” his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family was his greatest joy.

Laurence is survived by his seven children, Linda (Tom Fenton) Peterson of Somerset, Greg (Anke) Vier of Hudson, Gary (Pam) Vier of Hudson, Doug (Linda) Vier of Palmer Lake CO, Lori (Ted) Dutcher of Centerville UT, Karen (Bruce) Diamond of Menomonie, and Kay (Dave) Anderson of New Richmond; twenty grandchildren, Justin, Brock and Brady Peterson; Jennifer (Dan) Freeman, and Barbara (Cliff) Gustafson; Britnie (Paul) Bierbrauer, and Boudy (Tiffany) Vier; Melissa (George) Burke, Ryan (Megan) Vier, Elise (Justin) Palmer, and Kristian Price; Andrew (Shelly) McDonald, Catharine and Samantha Dutcher; Karie (Mike) Morgen, Jeremiah and Joshua Diamond; Sarah and Matthew Hawkins, John (Theresa) Anderson, and Mica Anderson; 17 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; siblings, Dorothy (Harold) Bishop and Anna (Bob) Schuett; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence J. Vier, mother, Catharine Vera (nee Roberts) Sunde, wife, Madolyn, and granddaughter, Brea Vier.

A gathering of family and friends honoring the life of Laurence Vier will be held from 3:00-6:00pm on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home, 1010 Newton Street in Baldwin, WI. A private family burial will be held at the Hammond Cemetery in Hammond, WI. Memorials are preferred to the discretion of the family. Services have been entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home and Countryside Crematory of Baldwin, WI. 715-684-3434
