Lawrence ‘Larry’ Halvorson

Lawrence “Larry” M. Halvorson, age 85, of Hudson, WI, passed away on September 19, 2016 at his home in Hudson, surrounded by his family.

Larry was born on August 9, 1931 to Ole and Melina (Gagner) Halvorson in Rice Lake, WI. He attended school in Rice Lake and began working at a cheese factory in the Rice Lake area. It was during this time that he entered the United States Army in October 1951 and served active duty in Korea between 1951-1953 during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge from the Army and upon his return home to Wisconsin, he was united in marriage to Barbara A. Stenseth on January 16, 1954, and was blessed with their son, Don. Shortly after in the same year, he enlisted in the National Guard. Larry and Barb settled in Hudson, WI, where he began his long career Superior Dairies. In 1961, his National Guard unit was reactivated during the Berlin Crisis, and he assisted until the crisis had ended in 1962. He returned to his job at Superior Dairies (which is now Land o’ Lakes), where he worked for 37 dedicated years, retiring in 1990.

Larry was incredibly proud of his military service and spent many years in the National Guard, retiring as the 1st Sergeant of the Hudson/New Richmond 128th Infantry Unit. He also was a past member of the Hudson VFW, formerly serving as their vice commander. While military organizations and volunteering kept both Larry and Barb busy, Larry’s biggest love was the time he spent with his family. Larry and Barb were fortunate to travel often, and spent much time up at their cabin in Mikana, WI. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, playing cards, and tending to his gardens. His sense of humor and the many laughs he shared with his family and friends will be dearly missed and never forgotten.

Larry is survived by his wife, Barbara; son, Don (Pat) Halvorson; granddaughters, Kristy and Melissa Halvorson; great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Josie Waldroff; along with many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; and great-granddaughter, baby Waldroff.

A Celebration of Larry’s Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 26, 2016 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home, 520 S. 11th St., Hudson, with a gathering of family and friends held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Private family burial will take place at a later date at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner, WI.
