Lawrence P. Gherty Jr.

Larry Gherty, age 69 of Woodbury, MN, passed away on June 16, 2015 at his residence. Larry was born in Chicago, IL, on July 23, 1945. He was the third child and first son of Lawrence and Geraldine Gherty.  The family moved to Hudson in January 1947.  Larry attended St. Patrick Grade School and graduated from Hudson High School 1963.

Larry worked his entire life, be it on the family Christmas tree farm, operating the projector at the Hudson Theatre, doing mechanical work, or his passion, operating a semi-tractor-trailer, as a driver.  He worked for various regional carriers, but the longest at Dahlen Transport of Newport, MN. He retired as a proud Teamster.  He enjoyed his retirement, with summers on Balsam Lake and over the road trips across the United States and Canada, especially his annual trips to New Orleans for Christmas with his daughters.  He enjoyed time in the outdoors, hunting and fishing, so long as it wasn’t too cold.

He was married to Elaine Newstrand Gherty for 27 years.  Larry was previously married to Roberta Gherty and they had five children.  He is survived by his wife Elaine, daughters, Kelly Gherty Butler (Julius), Dawn Gherty, Becky Gherty, and grandchildren Julius and Nolan Butler.  He is also survived by his siblings, Barbara Moore, Joni Henningsen (Douglas), Mark Gherty (Maeta), Mary Gherty Lehman (Arthur), and Maureen Tuggle (Chris), in addition to nephews and nieces.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence P. Gherty and Geraldine Gherty, his daughter Christine and son Lawrence P. Gherty, III; brother Terrence Gherty, and brother-in-law Maurice Moore.

A Memorial service for Larry will be 11AM Saturday, June 20th at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Hudson; 520 So. 11th Street; Hudson, Wisconsin. A gathering of family and friends will be one hour prior to the service at O’Connell’s Saturday morning. Memorials generally preferred to the family.
