LeRoy Doornink

LeRoy Doornink, age 77 of Hammond died Tuesday, January 31st, 2017 at United Hospital in St. Paul with his family at his side. LeRoy was born on March 28, 1939 in Baldwin, Wisconsin; the son of Chris and Catherine (Duckert) Doornink. He was raised in Baldwin attending Happy Valley Elementary School prior to graduating from Baldwin High School. On July 2, 1960, he was united in marriage to Joyce M. Richards at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Baldwin. This union would be blessed with three daughters; Crystal, Cheryl, and Cary.

LeRoy worked for the St. Croix County Highway Department for 35 years. There he started out driving gravel truck and eventually moved to maintenance truck until his retirement. He received numerous compliments for a “job well done” and was sadly missed when he retired. During part of that time he also worked at Valu Implement, where he delivered machinery and maintained the property. After retiring from the Highway Department in 1996, he continued to work at Valu Implement. LeRoy took great pride in his work and had a strong work ethic; which he passed on to his daughters. His daughters were the light of his life and nothing was too good for them. LeRoy had a zest for life and enjoyed his yearly trips to Las Vegas, which turned into weekly trips to Turtle Lake casino. He was a member of the Hammond Lions Club and was also a volunteer fireman for the Hammond Fire Department for many years. LeRoy spent many hours tending to his yard, which resembled a park, and always making sure his white vehicles were sparkling clean. He also took pleasure in feeding the birds and certainly wasn’t a fan of the squirrels trying to take their fair share.

LeRoy will remain in the hearts of his loving wife Joyce; daughters Crystal (Marc) Hammer, Cheryl Cowles, Cary (Joe) Kern; grandchildren Becky (Kurt) Shaleen, Sarah (Jesse) Ptacek, David Jr. ‘DJ’ (Cassie) Cowles, Jillian (Taylor) Bonow, Mitchell Kern, Kevin Kern; great grandchildren Ava, Kaylee, Landon, Jaxon, Charlie, Daimen, Cloe, Mason; siblings Cecil Doornink, JoAnne Arnquist, Kaye (John) Araneo, Kathleen (Jim) Armstrong, Robert ‘Butch’ (Sherry) Doornink, Keith (Lucy) Doornink; sister-in-law Hazel ‘Toots’ Doornink; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by this parents; parents-in-law Ted and Mandie Duckert; son-in-law David Cowles, Sr.; brother Marvin Doornink; brothers-in-law Doug Arnquist and Glen Bark; and sister-in-law Pat Doornink.
