Margaret M. Lansing Bettendorf

Margaret Mary Lansing Bettendorf, age 100 of Hudson, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2018 at the Christian Community Home in Hudson days after her 100th birthday.

Margaret was born on February 21, 1918 in Spring Valley, Wisconsin; the daughter of John and Edith (Patterson) DuBoe. She attended Holy Angels Parochial School in Minneapolis prior to graduating from St. Joseph Academy in St. Paul. At a young age, she developed a caring demeanor that lasted a lifetime. She furthered her education with on the job training at St. Joseph Hospital in St. Paul. She began a long and rewarding career as a nurse. In 1941, she was united in marriage to Harold Lansing. This union would be furthered blessed with four children. Together, they owned and operated the Ellsworth Nursing Home for several years. Harold handled the administrative duties while Margaret oversaw the nursing and patient skills. These years helped mold and create the nursing homes of today. Harold would precede her in death in 1973. She continued her nursing endeavor, working for Miller Hospital; commonly known as United Hospital today. Her last position there was Community Resource Coordinator prior to her retirement. In 1977, she would marry Joseph Bettendorf; himself a widower with two sons. Joseph too would later precede her in death in 1987. 

Margaret was born and raised with a musical gift. At the young age of 8, she was playing the church organ for masses in St. Paul. Her talent as an organist grew and became much appreciated. She served as church organist over many years for St. Francis Catholic Church in Ellsworth as well as St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hudson. She also enjoyed a challenging game of euchre or cribbage with friends and family. She loved the outdoors and was known to try her hand at pan fishing too. She loved the taste of a good blue gill. Furthermore, she was very proud of her country and our veterans as she belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary Club.

Margaret is survived by her children Mary Kay Brunkow, Robert (Katherine) Lansing, J. Michael (Pat) Lansing, and Lynn (Gary) Schneider; step sons, Joseph (Helen) Bettendorf, and Michael (Karen) Bettendorf; 14 grandchildren, Corey (Connie) Lansing, Vicki Andersen, Dana (Julie) Lansing, Justina (Curtis) Kees, Noa (Connie) Lansing, Taricia Lansing, Asia (Kim) Lansing, Grady Schneider, John (Melissa) Bettendorf, Ann (Todd) Lemke, Matthew (Carrie) Bettendorf, Joseph (Teja) Bettendorf, Tom Bettendorf, and Pam (Phil) Sells; 35 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Harold Lansing and Joseph Bettendorf; her parents; son-in-law, Cliff Brunkow; and grandson-in-law, Kevin Wakefield.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Margaret will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at the St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1500 Vine St., Hudson. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial at the St. Francis Cemetery in Ellsworth. In lieu of flowers, memorial are preferred to the Christian Community Home of Hudson, Adoray Hospice, or St. Patrick Catholic Church.
