Margaret McLeod

Margaret Claire “Dolly” McLeod, age 96, of Stillwater, passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening, February 16, 2011 at the Linden Care Center. She was born third of five children to William L. and Margaret M. (Bey) Dehart in International Falls, MN. The family moved to St. Paul, where she would graduate from high school in the early 1930s. Upon graduation, like many young women, she went to work on the line at the ammunitions plant. On April 12, 1936, Dolly was united in marriage to William A. McLeod. Together, they had a son, Thomas. William died in 1955.

Dolly was a hard worker, often having more than one job. She worked as a hairstylist for many years, and in the late 1970s she “retired” from her job as an office clerk at Anchor Casualty Insurance Company. She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary. She was talented at knitting, crocheting and needlework; her family members still treasure many of their handmade gifts. Dolly loved to read, especially the newspapers, and took pride in the McLeod clan history.

In addition to her husband, Dolly was preceded in death by all four of her siblings: Ed, Tom, Ray and Beth. She is survived by her son, Captain Thomas C. (Naomi) McLeod of Covington LA; grandchildren: Heather (Steve) Stoehr of Hammond WI and Sean McLeod of San Francisco CA; former daughter-in-law, Sherry McLeod of Hudson WI; step-grandchildren, Michael and Joel Strand; great-grandchildren: Benjamin, Elijah, and Kyleigh Stoehr and step-great-granddaughter, Lauren Strand; and her extended family.

A celebration of Dolly’s life will take place this summer; notification will be published. Services have been entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home and Countryside Crematory, 715-386-3725.
