Marnie Johnson

Marnie Jo Johnson, age 55 of Hudson, Wisconsin, passed away on October 11, 2021 at United Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. She was born Marnie Hulbert on March 19, 1966 in Mitchell, SD to Gordon Hulbert and Emerietta (Hanson) Martinez. She grew up in Rapid City, South Dakota and in 1984 graduated from Rapid City Central High School. Marnie’s family truly meant everything to her; she was married on July 3, 2004 to David Toskey in the Beartooth Mountains near Red Lodge, Montana. She was a devoted mother to her three sons: Kyle, Justin, and Gregory; as well as a proud and loving grandmother to her two granddaughters, Aubrey and Charlotte. Marnie’s friends were also her family and she was exceptional at making friends. Marnie could come back from running an errand with a collection of new friends. Those who knew Marnie well would say that she was extremely giving and empathetic. For her friends and family, she would often drop everything to help them with whatever they needed or just to bring to them a delicious homemade meal.

Marnie owned and operated a successful wedding and event planning service, Make It Exceptional Co., in Stillwater, MN. Marnie was a skilled event planner as well as extraordinarily sentimental and spent her career ensuring that her clients and their families had perfect special days and memories to last a lifetime. Marnie’s youngest son, Gregory, passed away abruptly in 2013. This tragic loss led Marnie, and her giving spirit, to start a “take what you need, leave what you can” memorial called Gregory’s Blessing Box, outside of the Memorial Library in New Richmond, Wisconsin. Marnie extended her kindness to helping others through their losses, particularly fellow grieving parents. Marnie was not only an excellent shoulder to cry on, but a joyful woman who could always be counted on for a laugh. Her friends and family will remember fondly many nights spent laughing around her kitchen table and enjoying her cooking, as she often prepared enough food for a small army.

Marnie will remain in the hearts of her husband of 17 years, David Toskey; sons, Kyle (Catherine) Johnson and Justin Johnson (Maria Overbee); step-children, Tyler Toskey, and Leah (Matthew) Germishuys; grandchildren, Charlotte Johnson, Aubrey Beaman, and Blake Penick; her father, Gordon (Bobbie) Hulbert; former step-mother, Bonnie Hulbert; brother, Martin Hulbert; and many other relatives and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Gregory Kaiser; and her mother Emerietta (Art) Martinez.

A Memorial Service for Marnie will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 21, 2021 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 611 S. Third St., Stillwater, MN. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday prior to the service. Marnie’s memorial service will be livestreamed through St. Michael’s Catholic Church facebook page. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred. Due to the abrupt nature of her passing, a GoFundMe page has been setup to benefit Marnie’s family in this difficult time.
