Maxine Dorothy Conery, age 95, of River Falls, formerly of Ellsworth, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2023 at the Wellhaven Assisted Living with two of her children by her side. Maxine was born on October 18, 1928, in Union Township of Pierce County to Emil and Dorothy (Martin) Meyer, Maxine grew up in Ellsworth and graduated high school in the class of ’47. During her school years, she developed a fondness for a young man named James Conery. Their connection deepened, and on April 26, 1948, they exchanged vows at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Ellsworth. Settling in St. Louis Park, they created their home and raised six children together.
Maxine, blessed with culinary skills, began her career as a cook at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, dedicating over twenty years to her work while simultaneously nurturing her own family. She found joy in tending to her home and family, finding fulfillment in the simple pleasures of life. Watching birds play around feeders brought her much delight, and her green thumb produced flourishing flowerbeds and a garden that provided for canning, jam-making, and freezing.
Maxine turned dreams of picnics into reality, creating memorable moments with James during country drives, spontaneous stops at picturesque locations, and memorable picnics. This tradition extended to Mother’s Day events for their children, showcasing Maxine’s talent for packing tasty baskets. Her baking prowess, particularly her mouthwatering brownies with the perfect frosting, was unmatched.
A skilled seamstress, Maxine crafted quilts, sweaters, mittens, and dishcloths as expressions of gratitude for the blessings in her life. Her love extended to animals, with a special place in her heart for her dogs and cats. Despite her quiet demeanor, her faith was a guiding force, and she lived as an exemplary ambassador for it. Maxine, who converted to Catholicism upon marriage, instilled unconditional love in her children.
Maxine is survived by her children Michael (Mary Kay) Conery, Maureen (Jerry) Ronke, Elizabeth Conery, Timothy (Mary Jo) Conery, Peggy Conery; eleven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, son Kevin Conery, and grandson Logan Conery.
