Maxine Joyce Eccles

Maxine Joyce Eccles, age 90, of Plum City, WI, died Monday, September 29, 2014 at the Red Wing Health Center, Red Wing, MN. Maxine was born on January 18, 1924 in Plum City, the oldest of four children born to Herbert and Rose (Gilles) Metcalf.Maxine attended grade school at St. John’s Catholic School, Plum City, WI and attended high school at Sacred Heart Catholic School Lima, graduating in 1942, after graduation, she moved to Winona, MN and attended business school and worked at JR Watkins Co until 9/23/1944. Maxine enlisted in the US Navy on 6/10/1944 and began active duty at the Pentagon as a WAVE working as a clerk typist on 10/5/1944 until her honorable discharge on 12/1/1945.Maxine was united in marriage to Elwood Eccles on November 16, 1945 at South Post, Ft. Meyers, VA. They made their home in Waltham, MA, where Maxine worked for Raytheon Mfg., as a legal secretary. They returned to Plum City, in 1948, where they have resided ever since. Elwood and Maxine owned and operated the Plum City Feed Mill for many years retiring in 1986.Maxine loved to play solitaire and teaching her grandkids how to play “Kings Corner”.Maxine was active in her community and church, serving as president and member of the La Crosse Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, member of St. John’s Catholic Church and Altar and Rosary Society, where she was the director of CCD and the organist for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Frank Gilles American Legion Post #365 auxiliary, Plum City, WI.Maxine is survived by her husband of 68 years, Elwood Eccles, Plum City, WI. Five children: Diane (Kent) Gilles, Plum City, WI; Lalia (James) Martin, Maiden Rock, WI; Roland (Pamela) Eccles, Plum City, WI; Eloise (Billy) Catrett, Santa Fe, TX; Laurence (Gwen) Eccles, Arkansaw, WI. 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren with three on the way.She is further survived by her sister LaRose Priess,Red Wing MN and brother Herbert (Dorothy) Metcalf, Maiden Rock, WI and many other relatives and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, sister Elaine McCleary and grandson in law, Matthew Druppel.Military honors by the veterans of Plum City, will take place at the funeral home following the service.Memorials are preferred to the Plum City Public Library, P.O.
