Nellie Wittwer

Nellie H. Wittwer, age 80 of River Falls WI, died on Monday, December 27, 2010. Nellie was born on January 28, 1930 on the family farm near Long Prairie MN; one of ten children born to parents Clarence Marion and Thelma Marie (nee Smith) Warner. Like many farm kids of her generation, Nellie attended country school through the eighth grade. Nellie loved learning, and after she completed country school, Nellie had a desire to go on to high school. Though high school was not in the cards for Nellie at that time, she did go on to earn her GED as an adult, and then at age 52, Nellie earned her degree in computers at the 916 Vo-Tech School, or what is now known as Century College.

On February 15, 1947 in Gutches Grove MN, Nellie would be united in marriage to Erwin Arthur Wittwer. This union in marriage would be blessed with four daughters and a son. Though Nellie worked many different jobs outside of the home from time-to-time, her top priority throughout all of her life was her family. Nellie worked hard to keep a nice home, and grow a bountiful garden each season. Through her love of family, her home-cooked meals, and her fresh baked goods, Nellie made their house a home. Nellie also took time to quilt, crochet, knit, make hardanger and plastic canvas, and sew clothes for her kids and their dolls alike. And in her free time, Nellie also taught herself to play piano, as well as the accordion and concertina. Nellie’s love lives on in the multitudes of memories she leaves with her family.

Nellie is survived by her husband of 63 years, Erwin; daughters Judy (Randall) Rodrigue of Kileen TX, Jane (Bill) Kirk of Ellsworth WI, and Jennifer (Richard) Reynolds of Marana AZ; son, Erwin James (Bonnie) Wittwer of River Falls WI; grandchildren, Brian, Robert, Joyce, Jeremiah, Charles, Michael, Jason, Jamie, Joe and Jessica, eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Lorraine, Shirley, Hazel, Daisy, Doris, Delores, Mary Ann, and Thelma; brother, Floyd; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Nellie was preceded in death by her daughter, Joyce Faye, who died at the young age of seven.

A Memorial Service for Nellie Wittwer will be held at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at the First Baptist Church of River Falls WI, with Pastor Philip M. Bushy officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be held at a later date. Services handled locally by the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Hudson WI, and the Countryside Crematory. 715-386-3725
