Nona Eugenia O’Connell age 87 of Hammond, died Wednesday November 21, 2012 at Deerfield Gables in New Richmond. Nona was born on November 4, 1925 in Elmwood, Wisconsin; the daughter of Elmer and Delia (Arneson) McKernon. She was raised in Elmwood where she attended school. On August 18, 1951, she was united in marriage to Hugh Henry O’Connell at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elmwood. This union would be blessed with three children; Mack, Meg, and Richard. Although she was a dedicated homemaker and wife, she also enjoyed her time in banking. She began working for the bank in Elmwood as a teller before working for the Hammond State Bank as cashier and, for many years, head teller.
Nona was active in her community volunteering on many different levels. She was an active member of the Baldwin Area Medical Center Auxiliary as well as treasurer for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. She had a sound faith and took great pleasure from helping with the Parish Council of Catholic Women (PCCW) and as Immaculate Conception choir director. She loved getting out with Hugh and friends whether bowling at Bol’s Lanes, golfing with the ladies league at the Hammond Golf Course, or simply playing her hand in a game of cards. Lastly, they supported St. Croix Central School programs and activities their entire life. In appreciation to their steadfast dedication to SCC sport programs, they received the prestigious Panther Pride Award.
Nona will remain in the hearts of her husband Hugh, children Meg and her husband Tom Hansen of Mesa, Arizona, Richard and his wife Kathleen O’Connell of Cedarburg, Wisconsin; grandchildren Marc, Luke, Shea, Mackenzie, Riley, and Charlie.
Nona is preceded in death by her parents, son Mack O’Connell, and brother Arnold (Lucille) McKernon.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 6PM, Friday November 30 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hammond with Father Jerry Harris officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the mass from 3Pm until 6PM at church on Friday. Memorials preferred.
