Myers, Phyllis Eileen, 93, long time elementary teacher and Reading Specialist at Jackson Elementary School in Green Bay, died peacefully on February 10, 2023 in Hudson Wi.
Born August 12, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois, Phyllis lived many years in Grosse Pointe, Michigan and graduated from high school in Wolcott, Indiana. She often joked they did not have enough students in her senior class to sport an entire basketball team.
Phyllis received her BA from Indiana State University and her Masters from UW Oshkosh. A teacher till the end, she was known for what she called “Myers Boot Camp,” including free tutoring in her backyard in the summer.
A group of 5th graders she mentored won first place in the state of Wisconsin in a Future Problem Solving Competition. That won them all a trip to the national competition in Michigan.
Besides teaching, among her many talents and hobbies were singing joyfully, exercising with great drama and vigor, gardening, jam making, reading, DAR membership and travel.
Always up for a spontaneous adventure, Phyllis enjoyed several flights west in a four seat airplane touring the National Parks. She loved visiting Door County for the cherry juice. Phyllis traveled to Europe many times, London and a small boat cruise of Greece were her favorites.
Phyllis provided free parking in her driveway during Packer Games to both friends and strangers. She considered the song, “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” to be the best religious statement of any song. She often said, “It’s nice to be important but it’s more important to be nice,“ also, “If it’s not kind or necessary, don’t say it!“
The excellent staff at Red Cedar Canyon Assisted Living, Moments Hospice, and Dr Logan loved her sweetness, humor and feistiness. Her common reply when asked how she was doing was, “Fine and dandy!” if she was feeling well and, “Fine” if she wasn’t. Phyllis’s family would like to express our gratitude to all of the staff there. You are angels and as fine a group of people as we have ever met.
Phyllis was the last of a strong and beautiful generation. She will be greatly missed.
